Ash Latest
Kerrang! April 25 1996
'1977' Hitting No. 1
Ash celebrated the news that their full-length debut album '1977' had entered the UK charts at Number One with an all-night bender that lasted almost 24 hours.
The Irish three-piece heard the official announcement of their incredible chart position in a London bar, and quickly agreed that the most appropriate course of action was to get "completely pissed" . Bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurray reckon they downed, up to 30 shots ... each.
Says a woozy Mark, speaking from his hotel bed, "We just drunk
ourselves f**king stupid. We even out-drunk our roadcrew!"
He adds: "It's like, f**k, The album's already gone gold. That's
100,000 copies - in one week! We can't believe it"
The teenage bassist has a firm response to anyone who suggests that '1977' only went to the top of the charts because it
was on sale at the 1977 price of £3.99: "F**k you!" he snorts. "The only people who've been pissed off by it are the major record companies. It's great for the fans, and we're still making a profit on it, so I don't give a f**k what anyone says."
Ash are currently touring the UK in support of 1977, and have
appearances pencilled in for both Later...With Jools Holland
and Chris Evans TFl Friday. The band head off to America in July, where they'll stay for much of the remainder of the year.
