Melody Maker September 4 1999
Calvin Klein
ASH's Tim Wheeler and Charlotte
Hatherley are set to break into the
fashion world as the new faces
of Calvin Klein - and all because
of a Melody Maker front cover.
The two members of
the band have signed a
lucrative contract with
the top US designer
and flew off to America
last week to shoot the
multi-million pound
advertising campaign.
The band's
spokesman revealed
that Tim and Charlotte
were spotted by
Klein, who had been
looking for a young
couple with attitude
to market his new collection.
"I think it was very much a case of
being in the right place at the right
time," their spokesman said. "Tim
and Charlotte were pictured on the
front cover of Melody Maker and
from what I know, that's where the
idea came from. It seems Calvin Klein
was very keen to get a young couple,
and quite a few other rock stars,
including Melissa from Hole
and
Shirley Manson from Garbage
,
have been used in the past.
When asked about
how much the
deal was worth, the
spokesman said:
"It's not really about
the money, anyway.
They are both really
excited about
fronting a campaign
for a designer such as
Calvin Klein. They've
never done anything
like this before."
Watch out for them
on billboards, in the
and on television
commercials next year.
In the meantime, Ash are playing
a show at Dublin's Olympia Theatre
on September 9, before embarking
on a six-week tour of America, where
they'll promote the US release of
'Nu-Clear Sounds' .
