Live at Astoria review

ASH
London Astoria, January 31

No matter how many times Thom Yorke wails, or Cerys moans about enduring another night out at an exclusive celeb hang-out, the simple fact remains - being a rock star is an easy life. Take Ash's Tim Wheeler. Not only does he perv around with a naked model for the Numbskull video, but when - after several months of virtual inactivity - he has to do some actual work and write new songs, he jets off to do it in sun-kissed Costa Rica. Yeah, life must really suck.

Still, before scribbling away, he probably needed some time to ponder Ash's eternal problem. Which, after emerging with such initial exuberance, is this - they must progress (eternal re-runs of 1977 would be incredibly boring), without appearing to mature into dull old bores. He needn't worry, because Nu-Clear Sounds was the perfect compromise - more accomplished, but much louder and sleazier. This time around he's got help too, as Charlotte Hatherly is also penning a few tunes of her own. Some of which, will be unveiled as Lamacq Live takes over the Astoria for Ash's first London gig in over a year.

Rumours suggest the new material is both punky and harmonic. Which might not sound like massive progress, but to those who love Ash's soaring pop, should be too good to miss.
