Melody Maker 28 August 1999

Live at Fuji Festival, Japan

Time to move on for a chat with Ash. This is their fifth visit to Japan, so drummer Rick McMurray's well primed for the forest locale. "This is really cool, we're getting to see the other side of Japan, cos usually we're stuck in the big cities like Tokyo and Osaka."
Guitarist Charlotte Hatherley chimes in: "Yeah, it's got a real Switzerland vibe.

Ash have built a remarkable following in Japan over the years and the kids outside are beside themselves with anticipation.
"The fans are all pretty nuts, they're really intense," nods Rick. The first time we were here, it was just ridiculous, there was (sic) 40 or 50 people standing outside the hotel all night. Nowhere else in the world will that happen.
Any new songsfor the faithful?
"Still writing," Rick says. "We've got roughly 20 to 25 ideas kicking about.
This starts Rick and Charlotte playing verbal ping-pong.
Charlotte: "We'll probably retreat back to Ireland and get the songs together."
Rick: "Record in the new year."
Charlotte: "In America, probably."
Rick: "Probably getting Butch Vig to produce it. He's got a real cool studio up in Madison. Last time we were in America we played a few shows with Garbage and he said when we get to Madison we should have a look around the studio."
There's a pause, so I guess that was the final volley.
