The Alternator has today learned that the charity concert Farm Aid has now been cancelled. According to organiser, Michael Eavis the cancellation is due to the an inablitlyto find a big-name headliner.
Apologies for lack of updates. Ash are to play Farm Aid in the Millenium Stadium, Cardiff, organised by Michael Eavis. This takes place on October 27, other bands include Coldplay
. A full tour has also been announced, see press for latest details.
Ash are taking part in a webchat tonight (22/08/01) on the
Radio One Website. Get your questions in here
The rocking Boxed Set performance screened on Scottish and Grampian on 09/07/01. The Alternator Team were of course in attendance for the tapings back in April. Screencaps are
now available in the Gallery Section.
Monday 9th of July was a great day for all things Ash. Radio 1 played the T in the Park set, a one-hour Boxed Set special screened in Scotland and, of course, Sometimes was released in the UK on CD and DVD Single. Buy buy buy !
The Alternator Team are back from a stonking T in the Park set
by Ash. By all means, the lads (and lass) stole the show on the
mud-laden Sunday in Balado, near Kinross.
NME.com agrees :
"MTV-friendly Beck now seems almost resigned to his position as a redundant spokesman for the slacker generation. He cuts a lonely figure on stage, wearing a black vest and sliding around while his band jam for Sexx Laws. Quit the Prince impersonations. Amazingly, now it seems that Ash could teach Beck a few things about being back in fashion. Thanks to their massively popular take on guitar rock - most notably tonight on songs like Cherry Bomb and Sometimes - Tim Wheeler's the biggest gay icon here today."
The Alternator should have exclusive photographs from the set in the Gallery section shortly.
Ash appear on this Monday's (9th July) Boxed Set programme, on Scottish and Grampian TV, at 11:30pm. Check listings for other regions.
Saturday tickets only for T in the Park have now sold out. At time of writing, tickets for Sunday and weekend tickets are still available.
Here is advance notification of next week's signing, to promote the new single:
Southampton, Salisbury Monday 9th
Harlow 1pm Tuesday
Milton Keynes, Northampton Wednesday
Crawley 12 noon Thursday
Crewe 1pm Friday
Ash will be part of the Napster resurrection this summer.
The band's record label, Infectious, is part of AIM, the Association Of Independent Music, in addition to inferior acts like the 'Phonics. AIM has just signed over it's entire roster of artists and their material in a licensing deal with Napster.
The band have always been supportive of the Napster cause, releasing the Free All Angels LP online weeks before the record hit the highstreet stores.
Ash repeated their support for Napster, stating it "helped create awareness of new songs... it is one of the best promotional devices in the world."
Napster will be re-launched this summer, with a new member-based set up.
As the Alternator first revealed weeks before anywhere else, the next Ash single is Sometimes. Official word is that the single will be released on July 9th, the day after Ash play the NME tent at T in the Park in Balado, Scotland. The single will be backed on CD with new previously unreleased tracks, including their cover of Teenage Kicks. The DVD version will contain Back From the Edge, another installment of the hilarious Road Movie. CD2 of the single will include more stills and video footage for use with the Free All Angels enhanced video mixer.
A double 7" is also planned for release one week later.

Ash played live on Radio 1's
John Peel programme on 06/06/01.
The Radio 1 site has the following interviews and reviews:

Welsh Evening Session audio interview
Sometimes will indeed be the next single from Free All Angels, as we revealed weeks ago. It will be released on June 9, and the DVD format contains the next installment of the Road Movie.
Ash will also be playing the Welsh Party in the Park, more details to come.
Ash are ambassadors for The Sun and
Coca Cola's Music 4 You promotion.
More details in the News section.
Infectious are/were offering 1977 and Nu-Clear Sounds for five pounds each. Please note: No-one at The Alternator benefits from this in any way. We are fans, representing the fans.
An Ash cover version of Abba's Mamma Mia at the London Ocean gig had to be abandoned on the 11th May as drummer McMurray appeared to be having some problems.
More hot news from The Alternator : During an incredible gig at the Glasgow Barrowlands Ballroom, Tim announced to the masses that Sometimes will be the new Ash single.
"We're celebrating our last night at number one," Tim laughed, as the band launched into a set packed with a healthy mix of Ash new and old, opening with Girl From Mars and including Goldfinger, Jack Names the Planets, Submission ( "Is anyone feeling horny ? Rick wrote this one..." ) and Jesus Says. Highlight of the evening was Tim wading waist-high in fans, crooning the excellent Candy like some sort of rock messiah.
"Anyone going to T in the Park ?" he asks. "We are...". The summer, of course, starts here.
Congratulations to Ash for scoring another UK No.1 album with
Free All Angels
Ash are to play a set of Abba covers at the weekly GAY Night at London Astoria on May 12, where they appear with Bjorn Again as part of a themed Eurovision night. The show follows Ash's regular gig at the venue on the same evening.

Exclusive vidcaps from the Later performance have been added to the Gallery section.
The three songs Ash recorded
earlier this week were screened on last night's Later With Jools Holland, broadcast on BBC 2 in the UK. Ash performed current single Burn Baby Burn, Shining Light and a cracking cover of John Peel's favourite song of all time: The Undertones' Teenage Kicks. They were joined by on the latter by the Undertones Damian O'Neill on guitar.
Ash have been announced as headliners for the Evening Session stage on Friday, 24th of August at the Reading Festival. The band will also headline the same tent at the Leeds leg of the festival, the next day.
Noel Gallagher has expressed interest in recording a collaboration with Ash's very own Tim Wheeler.
Gallagher, the songwriter behind such Oasis hits as Wonderwall, Supersonic and Some Might Say acknowledged that Wheeler "knows how to write a good pop tune."
Another Alternator Exclusive : Camden club The Undersolo gave away Ash promo CDs on 24/04/01, as part of their 8 Ball night. The CD included a collection of songs such as Warmer Than Fire, Goldfinger and various
Butch Vig remixes.
Stereophonics have confirmed their gig at Chepstow Racecourse on July 21 has been moved to Cardiff Millennium Stadium on the same day, due to thr foot-and-mouth crisis.
Tickets can be exchanged until Friday for the new 60,000-capacity venue, with fresh tickets on sale from Saturday.
Teletext have reviewed Free All Angels, giving the album 8/10, and saying '13 songs, 13 potential singles. A near faultless display of pop-rock dynamics, with hooks leaping out from every angle.' See the news page for the full review.

The Alternator Team were present, and witnessed a set including Only in Dreams, Girl From Mars, Kung Fu, Goldfinger, Submission, Shining Light, Burn Baby Burn and Numbskull. There was a temporary halt called while a replacement snare drum was utilised after succumbing to sticksman McMurray's abuse. The show is expected to air in July.
The Radio 1 website has an interview with Tim and Rick at the moment.

NME gives Free All Angels 8 marks out of 10.
