Ash Latest
Teletext 07 April 2001
Charlotte speaks about the tour and new album
Ash were burning up some rock 'n' roll rubber before
Fred Durst started his Rollin'
choreography classes.
A No. 1 album while still in their teens followed by a movie theme (A Life
Less Ordinary) and a grungey change of direction (Nu
Clear Sounds).
Of course it was the aid of a girl which helped them progress. Charlotte
talks to
Club about her and the boys' music and...Darius.
After storming back with Shining Light, Ash are about to
chalk up another hit with Burn Baby Burn.
They seem to have a thing about burning - once setting fire to a load of
Westlife CDs.
"We were doing an in-store appearance and the manager gave them to us," says Charlotte Ash. "Westlife just epitomise everything that's mind-numbing and contrived about the music industry."
Belting out raucous riffs 'n' stroming rock beats leads, Ash seem pretty cool. Then they do
something stupid like let Popstars reject Darius get up
on stage and sing with them...
"He bounded up to us at the Big Breakfast and said he was
a big fan," recalls Charlotte Ash.
"We invited him down to an in-store and he turns up to sing so we thought, 'throw him to the
lions!' "
While they're not the biggest fans of pop, Ash have a neat knack of adding catchy melodies to
their guitar-led songs. Girl From Mars, Oh Yeah, and more recently Shining Light prove this.
"I dunno what's going on with the music scene at the moment," laughs Charlotte. "For Shining
Light to go Top 10 when we haven't done work for two years is very promising. Good to hear
on the radio."
In between preparing songs for the new album Free All Angels (out April 23), Tim and Charlotte from Ash nipped
over to the US to model for Calvin Klein.
Free Nicks all round, then?
"I thought I'd get loads but they said, 'We'll give you $2000 and you can buy whatever you want'
," sighs Charlotte.
"That's like £1000. Modelling's a bit of a weird profession."
Ash start a new tour at the end of this month after letting the fans pick venues on their last
mini set of shows. This landed them in Ullapool.
"It was really weird. This person had voted like 2000 times. There were only 500 people there,"
laughs Charlotte.
"We didn't want to do the new songs in a big venue and letting the fans vote was a way of
giving back something."
Now Ash have a batch of new songs, Free All Angels, waiting to be rolled out, their new gigs are
going to be roof-lifters, Club predicts.
"I'm really looking forward to this tour," insists Charlotte. "We've got such a big choice of
set list now its going to be really good.
"We just can't wait to do it. We're so enthusiastic about it all."
