What exactly is an indiependent film? The Writers Guild of America defines it as a project with a budget of under $5 million. But is that really independent???
Kevin Smith's Clerks cost him $27,000. rich Linklaters' Slacker only ran him $7,000. these are budgets that are a far cry from $5 million, but these pictures made a significant mark on the film industry.
I always hear of these "independent" films and it bothers me. was sling blade, the usual suspects, The english patient, or shine really independent films? regardless these are great films, but are they independent??? is a film independent if it only has an "art house" release? or for godsake, distributed by miramax or october or fine line???
