The following are programs that I wrote for myself and am willing to share as freeware:
Enjoy!

Discover

To Top

This is a utility that I use to correct a design flaw in the Windows 95 (and NT 4.0) interface. When using the taskbar with the autohide turned off and always on top turned on, when windows are created they can be obscured by the taskbar. This is particularly troubling when the taskbar is aligned at the top of the desktop. Then the title bar becomes obscured. And sometimes, even the menu is obscured. The operating system should create these windows based on the working area, not on the desktop.

To correct this I give you discover.exe. What it does is move windows into the working area. If a window is too big to fit in the area, it will then shrink it if possible. Discover can be set to run automatically (on a timer) or by clicking it when the action is desired.

Directions for installation:

  1. Download discover.zip (10 kb) by clicking here.
  2. Unzip discover.exe to a permanent directory. Get PowerZip!
  3. Make a shortcut to discover.exe and put that in your Startup folder (most likely C:\windows\Start_Menu\Programs\StartUp)

WinDiff Executor

To Top

There are some nice tools that come packaged with Visual C++ 4.x. Among them is WinDiff.exe. This will perform a difference on two files or two directories. It works similar to a graphical version of the fc command in DOS. It's a pretty nice tool, especially for free (when you buy VC 4.) The only thing I found lacking was that drag-and-drop functionality was excluded.

I wrote this tool to provide the drag-and-drop functionality for WinDiff.exe. DiffExec is simply a window that accepts drag-and-drop files. When there are 2 or more items (an item is a file or a directory) in the window, DiffExec launches WinDiff and then clears the window. It will launch one instance for each combination of two items. DiffExec also has an Always-on-top feature.

Directions for installation:

  1. Download diffexec.zip (7 kb) by clicking here.
  2. Unzip diffexec.exe to a permanent directory. Get PowerZip!
  3. Make sure you have the MFC4 DLL's installed on your system.
  4. Make a shortcut to diffexec.exe and put that in a folder.
  5. Execute diffexec and then close it. This will create the diffexec.ini file in your windows directory.
  6. Edit the diffexec.ini file. In the Options section edit the Path setting to indicate the full path to windiff.exe on your machine.

Date Stamper

To Top

I created this utility to set the dates of files. Using this tool is very simple. You select the files, a date and time and then stamp them. You type in the date in the edit box. When the program first starts up, the date box is loaded with the current date and time. You can just edit this date to the one you want. You select the files into the window by use of drag-and-drop or by using file open dialog box activated with the Browse button. The file open dialog box, of course, allows multiple selections. Files can be removed from the list using the Delete button or by double-clicking on them. The list can also be cleared using the Clear button. Also, the window can be set to Always On Top. This can make drag-and-drop operations much easier.
