This is our dog, Ozzy. We adopted him from the animal shelter in Teterboro. He is an older dog, about 4 years old when we got him. We think he is a mix of German Shepherd and Siberian Husky. He had been abandoned at the Shoprite in Hasbrouck Heights. An employee at closing time found him tied up and brought him to the shelter. No one claimed him and he was waiting on death row the day we went to adopt.
Peggy says that dogs pick their masters, and that he picked us to go home with. I liked him for several reasons. He was a German Shepherd mix and my wife loves German Shepherds. His data indicated that he was friendly with people and good with children (which will be important when we start having little ones). He was a bit older, which was positive because I knew he wouldn't grow much larger. He wasn't big but not a little runt, either. He was house broken and already fixed. Plus he had a clean cage. Some of the other dogs had messed their cages. His was spotless. When we took him for a quick walk outside, he used the trees to take care of his business. I knew that he would not be giving us problems with that. Also at the shelter, a lot of the dogs were jumping and barking and some even biting at the people. He seemed very calm and unfazed by everything.
So we adopted him. The adoption people kept asking us if we were sure, because he was an older dog. I guess everyone else only adopts puppies. His original name was "Caruso." We changed it to "Ozzy" after the legendary Ozzy Osbourne. I have to credit my brother-in-law, Jimmy, with picking that name.
He has become a part of our family and he has become very protective. He's well behaved and we love him. Every day he reminds us why we adopted him by loving us back.
