Mountain Rock a triumph

by ?

Saturday may well go down in history as a landmark day for New Zealand music.

The first Mountain Rock, held last year in driving rain, was a qualified success - people came despite the weather, and the evnt broke even. But this years Kiwi-only rock festival was a resounding triumph. About 9000 attended the festival at Ballance, near Woodville, enjoying a fine day and spectacular show...

Jan Hellriegel was the first performer on stage in darkness, and she made the most of the opportunity to produce a stunning set. Despite the critical and commercial success of the It's My Sin album, there've been plenty of skeptics. They couldn't have failed to have been converted by this performance where Hellriegel and band played an absolute stormer.

Songs like It's My Sin, I'm Alive and The Way I Feel were played with power, passion and conviction. Her songs shone as bright as the stars in the clear evening sky and she deserved the huge ovation.

It was well that festival headliners The Muttonbirds were on next for anything less would have been anticlimactic...

Mountain Rock II proved that Kiwis love good Kiwi music. the huge crowd saw a show of international calibre. The laser and light shows were brilliant - everything that was promised and more. After this success, Mountain Rock III can only be bigger and better.

Festival awards:
Best performance: Shona Laing
Runners up: Jan Hellriegel, Shihad, Muttonbirds
Biggest surprise: Jan Hellriegel's cover of Motorhead's Ace of Spades; worth the price of admission to hear that alone...
