Jan Hellriegel

Back in her student days in Dunedin, Jan Hellriegel was one of Cassandra's Ears - an all-woman band. Now, she's on her own, and getting nothing but praise from the music press. Warner Music has such faith in Jan's talent that they've decided to release a solo album, due out in march this year. While her music is angelic in an altrnative vein, her heart still lives at home in the heavy-metal district of West Auckland, as her selection of records shows.

I grew up on...

A selection of West-Auckland favourites, including Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan... I also had a passion for Wagnerian operas.

My record collection today consists of...

All of the above, plus loads of local music - The Great Unwashed, The Verlaines, JPS Experience, Sneakey Feelings, The Straitjacket Fits and Jay Clarkson. Favourite records at the moment are the latest from Nirvana, The Sundays and Sam Phillips.

The future of music...

Could lie anywhere. Maybe its atonal, minimalist, loud, grungy. Fortunately, I have no idea, so I can try to keep an open mind and try not to say, "Well, in my day..."
