Taking it to the Mountain

by ?

Singer-songwriters Jan Hellriegel and Shona Laing met the press in Wellington yesterday to publicise Mountain Rock II, an 18 hour, 30,000 watt Kiwi music extravaganza kicking off at Balance, near Woodville, on January 16.

Hellriegel and Laing join a large lineup of new and not so new acts in the event, among them Push Push, Muttonbirds, Graham Brazier, Harry Lyons, Southside of the Bombay, Jordan Luck, Shihad and Nine Livez. The music festival is set to range from the sweetest pop to the hardest rock and all the music is Kiwi.

Being Kiwi is what it is all about, explains organiser Paul Campbell. He syas he and co-organiser Paul Geange, musicians themsleves, started off with "muso" parties in Wairarapa years ago.

The parties proved so popular that last year they decided to put together Mountain Rock, a showcase of New Zealand talent. Five thousand people turned up to watch the show, and though it rained most stayed.

"It's also a way to prove to record companies that New Zealand acts can handle the big stage, and keeps the money in New Zealand," Geange says.
