JAN HELLRIEGEL : at The Riverina Hotel last night.

Reviewed by Steve Scott

With the recent release of her debut CD It's My Sin receiving national acclaim, it would have been easy for Jan Hellriegel to begin with a well known single.

However, Hellriegel began her 90 minute set performing new songs. Approaching the keyboard with hands-on-hips, she immediately struck a chord of confidence as she delievered Human's Don't Have Wings.

New guitarist Brian Harvey combined strongly with Mark Bell, creating a deep and wide atmosphere of sound. Certainly that thrust of energy encouraged and surrounded Hellriegel's dark, dominating and sometimes seductive vocals.

It was well structured on Richmond Road Revisited, followed on Stupidest Things (new song), and incorporating Harvey's sharp ringing tones and Tony Lumsden' formidable bass pattern on the single It's My Sin.

Hellriegel's stage rapport sparked an excited response from a few punters. The song Surprise was alive with harmonies, drive and Hellriegel's determined vocal, and the feeling built during I'm Alive and exploded onto the dance floor during the swaying melodic energy of The Way I Feel.

Hellriegel delivered Wings Of Steel with a fiery passion that commanded the stage and then moved on to the cheeky swing of Westy Gals "...who escape their time with their $3 bottles of wine."
