Jan Hellriegel is a storyteller - and like any other storyteller, some of her stories are nice, some not so nice. Their aim is to evoke a reaction. So it is with her new single, Pure Pleasure. As the final lyric says 'Pure pleasure is blind ". The original lyric inspiration came to Jan after reading American Psycho, the controversial banned novel. Though not based in any way on the book, the song does explore the darker side of human nature in its often reckless pursuit of pleasure. Daniel Denholm's production perfectly enhances the song, an arresting melody over a solid rock rife by turns sweet and disturbed. Pure Pleasure is for those who like their music interesting, challenging, those who don't mind wallowing around below the surface. Jan's previous single, Manic (Is A State of Mind), received rave reviews nationally and now with Jan based in Melbourne (at the moment she's based in a suitcase actually!) the Australian public will have the chance to get to know this intriguing artist further. Jan recently supported Jeff Buckley in Sydney, and playing without her band, blew everyone away, including Mr Buckley himself. Pure Pleasure is taken from Jan's album, Tremble, set for release early next year. If there is a link between Pure Pleasure, Manic and the other songs on the album, it is in the honesty of the songwriter. For Jan, her songs are a reflection on a mood, a time or a story, and are delivered undiluted. Please take the time to listen to, and support, this uniquely talented performer.
