Melanie Janine Brown was born in Leeds, Yorkshire on May 29, 1975. Her father, Martin, moved to England from the Caribbean island of Nevis and married Andrea, Mel B's mother. Melanie grew up smart and strong. "I only played with boys. Girls were always crybabies" she commented. As she got older, she became more interested in the arts, and took acting and ballet lessons. Later on, she got into the Intake School of Performing Arts in Leeds. Eventually she was accepted into the prestigious Northern School of Dance. After that, she went to the Leeds College of Music to study voice and percussion.
After school, she started auditioning for shows. She tried to get into the "Coronation Street" soap opera, but had to mange with some walk-on parts and a shoe commercial. But it didn't make enough money. She ended up as a "private dancer" in a nightclub.
She realized later on that she'd have to leave Leeds for London if she wanted to get somewhere in showbiz. So she left for the big city. She did a few small jobs there at first to pay the rent. Then, she became a Spice Girl after auditioning for the ad in "The Stage".
Mel B definently has a wild streak. She can be wild and raucous, and then go to quiet and contemplative. She also loves going out to clubs in the evening and dancing her heart out.
Mel B is now Scary Spice, and is the fourth most popular Spice Girl.
