In the beginning... |

The whole DJ KARLOS legacy
started when, fed up with thrash\death metal in '92 one of my mates played me the
Prodigy's first album. I was amazed at how fresh and different this was from what I had
been listening to previously and to what was being played in the charts. Then the whole
thing moved to another level when we got our hands on a copy of the infamous hardcore DJ
Ellis Dee, live at Illusion. The way that he was able to run the tunes together amazed me.
At the time the small hardcore scene that existed in Dublin, Ireland was delivered a death
blow by the shutting of it's two best clubs, the"Asylum" and "Sides".
With the closure of these clubs all the DJ's decided that it was time for a change and the
change was "House". We continued on by ordering hardcore tape packs from the likes of "Helter
Skelter" and "Dreamscape". At this stage the scene in England was splitting
with one set of DJ's-Grooverider, Fabio, Randall all opting to play the more breakbeaty
and moody style of music called originally "Jungle Tekno". The other set of
DJ's- Dougal, Ramos, Vibes decided that they didn't like the moody sound so they started
making and playing more uplifting tunes, that still had a breakbeat element to them. There
were also the DJ's- Slipmatt who tried to bridge the gap and play both forms of music in a
set. There were also another set of DJ's- Brisk,Clarkee, Producer emerging playing a
harder tougher form of music called "Hardcore\Techno". Hearing all these
different DJ's with their different styles made me want to go out and try me hand at it.
So in late '94 I went out and bought me first set of decks ETP-DLS 3000 and a Numark 1080.
The decks to start, were belt driven, didn't always play in stereo, when you changed from
45 to 33, quite often they went to 78 and beyond. I would be interested to hear from
anyone else who had to cope with these things, because being honest it's amazing that I
ever learnt how to mix on these things. So I struggled on and went through a serious phase of buying happy hardcore (before the
cheese element) and it was during this time that I hooked up with Steve Harris and Scott
Summers playing hardcore on the old MIX 106 FM. It was at this stage that a DJ name needed
to be found and I settled on DJ Promise. Later on I found out that there was already a DJ
Promise, so a name change was required. This time I settled on the as dodgy, DJ
Phantom. After a while I really grew to despise this name aswell so eventually it was a
case of any of these made up names is going to sound crap so stick to your own. Eventually
boss owners CLUB FM shut MIX down. In between this time and when I was to be heard back on
the airwaves again, happy hardcore went and is still going through a period of just being
cheesy. As a backlash to this a new form was started by Billy Bunter and DJ Ramos called
Trance-Core. This form of music was a mix of the old style of hardcore without the cheese
element and added on top alot of analogue sounds. It was as this form of music was taking off that me old mate Steve Harris in connection
with Jeff Collins set up Jazz FM on a weekly basis. There was the normal Jazz crew but due
to Steve Harris' influence alot of drum n bass with myself and me partner in crime DJ
MATISSE bringing in the hardcore. As time progressed it became harder and harder to get
hold of good quality Trance-Core. I knew that it was about I just couldn't get any of the
record shops to order it in for me. Also I started to come across more and more Hardcore\Techno in the form of Deathchant
and Area 51.I had always been into gabber music as in Mokum and Ruffneck but these new
labels were putting alot more into their tunes. It was at this stage that I entered and
got through to North's up + coming competition at Rhyl in Wales. Here I palyed a mixture
of Trance-Core and Hardcore\Techno, but the competition was won by PressureHead(Surgeon16
Rec's) and Beagle + Skeeta(Deathchant Rec's). Now I have unleashed myself upon the Internet, it is my aim to keep all Hardcore Headz
out there in touch and up to date with what's happening. As I get to grips with JAVA and
HTML, I am hoping to include more graphics and slamming pieces of real audio to educate
those of you who don't know, to the "wonderful" world of Hardcore\Techno.
Massive shouts go out to the one like DJ STYLE for getting me started on the Internet, and
of course Steve Harris for getting me on the airwaves. Remember if your in the Dublin area check out "Hardcore Pressure" every Thursday night between the hours of 10-1a.m. on Jazz 89.8 FM. |
