SG discovery story:SU languished in a drawer for a long time before I had a craving to listen to it again. Like all good music, the deeper tracks took a few runs to come to grips with. Luckily Black Hole Sun and My Wave kept my interest up just long enough. With its music firmly rooted in my imagination, on my guitar (and in my greatest records of all time list), i went to collect the rest of their stuff and obsess over them for a while. Innovative tunings, timings and brilliant rhythm section would never cease to amaze me. Sadly, over the years I've felt most of their tunes pale away in comparison to SU's highlights.

Favourite Album/songs:In no particular order:
1. Head Down. Kim nailed it when he said something like "rhythm so thick you feel you could reach in a grab it"
2. Mailman - Grinds away with more feeling expressed than I thought possible.
3. Fresh Tendrils (It was cool finding a song as my namesake). The clavinet was a stroke of genius.
4. 4th of July - Chris' vocals take me away to another place.
5. Half - Some of Ben's music was the stunning pinnacle of the grunge and alternative movement. More creative than whole legions of bands.
6. Switch Opens - see 'Half' x2
7. Applebite - the only way to describe this song is to listen to it. The mood it slowly stirs defies words alone. side note: maybe the most amazing bassline ever. Only a genius could come up with that from the guitar part.
8. Mind Riot - Interesting on paper, Chris' vocals are first rate.

Live Experiences:I saw 'em. Yes they were good, weren't they?

Other Musical Tastes:I like music I can sink my teeth into intellectually. Needs to be creative: ie. an atmospehere in itself; or layered. Otherwise I find I eventually get bored with it. That said, currently I enjoy chunks of 'OK Computer' & 'Portishead' (But record scratching and electronic drums can really get on my nerves). There's no real substitute for a bit of power though, so sometimes its a bit of 'aenima' or STP, or something else good. Lounge music & Jazz are also good.

Other Comments:Normally I would put something like 'tie water balloons over your neighbours sprinklers', but i think this space would be better used by saying: to all SOMMS list members, the list could be a much more interesting place if we were prepared to critically discuss some of SG's work, instead of the usual 'I had a dream about chris last night', 'guess what?! the DJ played Spoonman!' or 'wouldn't it be cool if Chris played with _______'. Doesn't anyone else out there feel that a some of Kim's solos were mostly just tired old pentatonic noodlings (SWGMEC, FOBD, Spoonman)? Talk to me!
