The album also revolves around central themes of God, the music industry, and Billy's relationship to the fans and Yelena. Lyrically the songs are open ended stand inside your love could have been written about Corgan's love of his fans or the love of his girlfriend. The everlasting gaze could have been written about the fickle media or God. It's this ambiguity that shows that in love or disappointment, the feelings are the same. Phonically, the album would be a brilliant one to end the Pumpkins career with (if they indeed choose to break up) It microcosms everything the band has been doing for the past decade. It shows the lessons they learned from adore (shimmering guitars) the fuzz they learned on Siamese Dream, the drums that were instrumental to Mellon Collie and the lyrical ambuiguity of Gish. For me, this album is heartbreaking. The sadness! of the lyrics and the notes has never been so acute. When I listen to it, I am reminded of things ending-my childhood, the band. The album feels alone, isolated, beautiful. Its the quintessential pumpkins album, and it reminds me of how tragic it will be to lose this band, whether in 10 years or one year. I don't think even Radiohead could write beautiful tragedy like this. |
