GLACIER is a primarily-'80s heavy metal band comprised of high school friends who eventually took seperate paths, only to reunite in the 21st century! There have been many line-ups over the years (all but one including Pat Goebel), but the core group have stayed in touch & remain friends (New Year's Eve 1989/Summer1990/Summer1999).
Formed in Pat's basement in 1979, the band started as a trio and soon adopted the name GLACIER. The name, suggested by Pat, came from a street name at Black Butte Ranch in Bend, OR. Scott was the only band member with previous musical ability, having played bass in garage band Odyssey w/ Gosh! guitarist Todd Klingler (later w/ Razor & Manchild) & Troy Stutzman (drums, later w/ Razor, Manchild & Venarays). As the others started learning their instruments, they played easy, endless riffs and struck incredible poses. Steve Green was usually around to provide feedback (both literally & figuratively). Soon, the guys moved from Pat's basement into the vacant "rehearsal hall" in the living/dining room at the Goebel estate. Impromptu gigs were put on for friends as they played songs like: Rush's "La Villa Strangiato" and Cheap Trick's "Southern Girls" while exchanging instruments to display their instrumental virtuosity (just kidding about "Strangiato").
These were hard times, but the boys were encouraged by the Junction City Girls, and by propositions by Rob Halford (Pat & Sam) and Nancy Wilson (Scott). They also managed to meet & get professional guidance from: Angel City, Cheap Trick, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, Kix, Motorhead, Rail, Triumph and many other of their idols who graciously waited hours at backstage doors for them to show up! Sam was a man who was strictly rhythm (he didn't wanna make it cry or sing), so the decision was made to find a lead guitarist. After literally thousands of auditions (well, at least figuratively), they found the man who turns into a scruffy dog by the light of the quartermoon...
