Today the employees of our company learned that Jeff, the president, had been fired yesterday by the CEO. The CEO called him yesterday at lunch and told him there would be no need for him to return to the office again. Today Jeff packed up his office and left for good.
This is very sad to me. I liked Jeff a lot. He is a big part of my reason for staying with the company. What kind of disappoints me, too, is how easily people in the office are brushing this off. To me, his termination was very cold and not so classy. Especially in light of the way the last dismissal in this company was handled (also unbelievably not classy). Everyone's reaction has kind of been, "Well, that's the reality of the corporate world."
I don't like how this is supposed to make it okay. You can take the humanity out of anything by blaming it on some group entity. They say the CEO's "hands were tied." That's one thing I liked about Jeff. He did what was right without caring about the consequence because he could deal with it. Are people too lazy to care? Do I care too much? I think this is why I never did well in business. I'm not rational enough.
I think Sharelle and I are more upset about this than even Jeff is. But it's hard for me to understand why things have to happen the way they do. Maybe when I'm older I'll understand the need to pick your fights. Fuck, I thought someone's job and the direction of an entire company would be enough but what do I know.
