Donnie lost in his battle to win a seat in the new Scottish Parliament in the election on May 6th. He stood for his home constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West in spite of being offered an easier seat to win in Glasgow. In the Scotsman's Scottish Election website, the following was quoted: "However it was felt his campaign suffered because of the Government's fuel tax escalator which put the already high petrol prices in the Highlands even higher, Labour's student tuition fees and the fact that drivers are still paying to cross the bridge to Skye....(Donnie said later)"We have to recognise that the seat has been a Lib Dem seat for the past 17 years. But we made inroads at the general election and we hoped to make further inroads here."

Donnie was rumoured to be in the crowd at one of Runrig's Glasgow Royal Concert Hall this weekend (2/3 April). Apparently Bruce Guthro hollered "Hello Donnie!" to the crowd then said he meant Donnie Coutts, part of the stage crew but from what I'm told, the good fans that were there are pretty sure Donnie was in the house. I hope he had a good time and I hope Alex Salmond, leader of the SNP did too :-)
Donnie has warmly congratulated Runrig and new singer Bruce Guthro. Writing in his column in the Glasgow Times, he said 'It's good to see Runrig back on the road with an excellent new album... Bruce Guthro, their new French-Canadian singer, who is an excellent singer-songwriter in his own right, brings a distinct new quality to Calum and Rory Macdonald's songs... He really excels on the track Travellers - the outstanding song on the album and I believe one of the best songs they have ever written... Despite the long wait for the album, the fans will consider it well worth waiting for... I look forward to seeing Bruce and the band live on the tour and I wish them all success for the future.'
Donnie's first solo album is to be released in the spring of 1999, possibly April and is believed to be produced by Chris Harley who worked on some of Runrig's best material.
