Aaliyah Tops the album Charts (MTV News)

Music fans mourning the passing of Aaliyah and those curious about her legacy will push the late R&B star to the top of next week's Billboard 200 albums chart.Despite strong debuts from Mary J. Blige and Slipknot, Aaliyah's eponymous album will vault to #1 on the albums chart next week, a month and a half after its initial release. The singer died August 25 in a plane crash that claimed the lives of eight others Sales of Aaliyah jumped from 62,000 copies during the week of her death to 305,000 copies in the week that followed, bumping the album up from #19. Aaliyah debuted at #2 upon its release in July and dropped as low as #27 two weeks ago. Renewed interest in the late singer will also push the "Romeo Must Die" soundtrack album (which features several Aaliyah tracks) back onto the chart at #164.The sales surge also places Aaliyah just ahead of hip-hop diva Mary J. Blige, who will debut at #2 on next week's chart with No More Drama. Blige's fifth studio album sold more than 294,000 copies in its first week in stores.Close behind are the masked men of Slipknot, who sold more than 254,000 copies of their latest effort, Iowa, to debut next week at #3. The debut is impressive for the hard-edged heartland metal outfit but falls short of industry speculation that placed the first-week tally at 350,000-500,000. Jay-Z Dogged By Bootleggers Again, The Blueprint To Come Early September 5, 6 p.m. ET, SonicNet Brian Hiatt and Shaheem Reid

It seems that if Jay-Z wants to keep his future albums from hitting the streets before their proper release dates, he'll have to hire a security detail that rivals the size of the secret service team in his video for "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)." Bootleggers in New York started selling two versions of Jay's album The Blueprint last week, and on Tuesday (September 4), Def Jam announced that it has once again pushed the LP's release date up one week, this time from September 18 to September 11. The Blueprint was originally set for release September 25, though that was changed by Def Jam and that date was given to DMX's The Great Depression. X's album has since been moved to October 23. Def Jam does not cite the illegal street vending of the album as provocation for The Blueprint's switch. In a statement, the label said the change was "due to overwhelming demand by consumers and retailers alike." (Complete Article is online at SonicNet).

Twin Rappers Kane & Abel Sentenced To Three Years - September 18, 5 p.m. ET, Launch

U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Vance gave identical twin rappers Kane & Abel (David and Daniel Garcia) the maximum sentence of three years in jail as part of plea agreement last Wednesday (September 12). The twins pleaded guilty to the charge of misprision of a felony and will begin their sentence on October 10. Judge Vance rejected an earlier plea agreement that would have called for only 24 months of jail time.Kane & Abel's charges stem from their involvement with reputed drug kingpin Richard Pena, who reportedly financed the twins' recording career while they were aspiring artists attending Xavier University. Pena was arrested in 1997 and is currently serving time for committing eight murders. As the twins' recording career failed to take off, they apparently became in debt to Pena and distributed narcotics for him to work off their debt from 1996 to 1997. Kane & Abel are scheduled to release their next album, Most Wanted Boys, on October 9, the day before their jail sentence is scheduled to begin. The set features guest appearances from Juvenile and Snoop Dogg. The twins now record for their own Most Wanted Records, and have put a plan in place that will keep the label afloat while they serve their jail time. The twins' best selling album to date was the gold-certified Am I My Brothers Keeper?, which was released on No Limit Records in 1998.-- Yves Salomon, New York
