Suede '98
The British band Suede were formed in late 1989 by singer Brett Anderson and bassist Mat
Osman. They started as a four-piece with 2 guitarists, Bernard Butler and Justine Frischman,
using a drum machine. After 2 years of minor success Justine, ex-girlfriend of Brett and
now in love with Blur's singer Damon Albarn, left Suede in order to form her own band called
Elastica. Meanwhile the drum machine had been replaced by human drummer Simon Gilbert and
the band had their big breakthrough in Britain when they were announced the "best new band
in Britain" on the cover of the Melody Maker in early 1992 with the release of the band's
debut single "The Drowners" still one month ahead ! It took the band one more year to
finally release their debut album "Suede" in 1993, which won the Mercury Music Award later
that year. In summer 1994 however, Bernard left the band during the recording of the band's
second album "Dog Man Star" because of musical and personal differences as well. He was
replaced by 17-year-old Richard Oakes and went on to several solo projects until he finally
released his debut solo album "People Move On" in early 1998. Meanwhile Suede became a
five-piece after Simon's cousin Neil Codling joined the band on keyboards and released
their first non-Butler album entitled "Coming Up" in late 1996. After becoming big stars
with that album in Northern Europe and the whole continent of Asia, Suede have been working
almost two years on their new album "Head Music" out on May 3rd. The first single off that
album is called "Electricity" and was the only Top Ten single in the UK off that album so
far. "She's In Fashion", "Everything Will Flow" and most recently "Can't Get Enough" tried,
but couldn't succeed in repeating the success of the CU singles ...
