This is a band from Montreal (Canada) that is beginning to be know a bit around here since they opened up for Sonic Youth (May 10th 1998). It's Thurston Moore himself that invite them after listening to their demo tape. They sign up with Kranky records and release their debut album last June. The band consist of about 8 musicians on stage playing most of the time acoustic instruments. If you have the opportunity to see them live, just DON'T HESITATE, I'm sure you won't be disappointed: they're so much intense in show. On album, you have the impression of listening to a soundtrack of some sort of really dark movie, giving you all kinds of toughs that range from society has gone wrong to what-the-hell-am-I-doing-reading-this-while-I'm-surfing on the 'net, just one click away -from-people-on-the-other-side-of-the-world-while-ignoring-those-just- one-step-away... Well ok, maybe I'm in those dark clouds again, but I'm now sure that GSYBE has something to do with the end of the world. I'm not so sure about the opposite.

(9.5/10) GSYBE can be describe as a experimental/progressive band. The music is very creshendo-tic, starting with quiet and basic material that smoothly evolve into something that is extremely intense and loud but always accessible to almost everybody (hey, if my father can dig that...). Unfortunately, the progressive side of this band really shows up live, the album being more quiet. Even though, some moments on the CD are just too juicy and intense, making it one of my favourite album. If you like Mogwai, Labradford and Pink Floyd, you'll probably like GSYBE.

ORDER CD
This 2 songs EP (for a total of 30 min!) is rather more condense than their debut album in the way that you won't find these huge gaps between songs. This is can be a good thing if you only like the progressive side of GSYBE, but if you also like the crazy feeling that your are in a weird-mello-drama-end-of-the-millenium-movie while listening to GSYBE, you'll probably realise that those parts are missing a bit. Instead, we have here 2 of the most progressive songs you can find around so that this EP is definitely worth buying. If you don't believe me listen to "Moya". I usually put 2 songs for each album I put on the page, so you have here the complete EP in fair quality real-audio.
