>>>Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you all about our rollercoaster rides and great Hershey chocolate milkshakes. I'm going to include events related to Hanson or the concert in some way.<<< We saw Hanson at Greatwoods as well, so some of this will be a comparison between the two concerts. Both of them were a lot of fun.
Our first Hanson-fan sighting was made the night before the concert, at a McDonald's 2 hours north of Hershey. We spotted a teenage girl wearing a camoflauge shirt, khaki pants, and a Zac "weird" hat.
On Saturday, we went to the Hersheypark. We saw many Hanson fans there, many in the obligatory Hanson t-shirts. We stopped in at a leather and jewelry shop at the amusement park. They had black-corded chokers, one all silver letters with "Hanson", one with "Taylor" and 6 different colors of little beads in between the letters. My daughter had a custom one made with "Taylor" and pretty blue beads in between the letters.
I had a lot of fun taking pictures of Hanson fans before the show, ones who were all decked out in their face paint, with banners and t-shirts. One picture was of 3 generations from the same family, all Hanson fans.
Before the soundcheck, I spotted Jarrod Gollihare walking behind the fence near the boxoffice. Talk about yellow hair!
We heard the soundcheck very well, including a guitar introduction of a very famous song from the '70's. I couldn't place it. A few fans tried to scale the fence and got into trouble with security. There was a fair amount of screaming during the soundcheck. We couldn't see a thing through the fence, as there was a windbreak of trees.
When they opened the gates to let us in, we discovered we were not in the second row of bleachers at the person in the box office had told me. We were about 7 rows up. Still not a bad view, around the 40-yard line, on Taylor's side of the stage.
I spot John Russell signing autographs. Anything I would have that's large enough to be signed was back in the bleachers with my family. I pulled out 2 ticket stubs and he signed them. He seemed real nice. ADMIRAL TWIN FAN ALERT: I told him my daughter wants to buy their CD and asked him if they're in stores yet. He said they probably will be in a few months. He was telling everyone, "enjoy the show."
A little while later, I saw Brad Becker signing autographs. I couldn't get close enough for an autograph. All of a sudden the fans start screaming. Someone must have thought they spotted a Hanson. Brad backed away, with a nervous smile frozen on his face. He looked like he was going to bolt. He eyed the crowd as someone would eye an unpredictable, dangerous creature, which some Hanson fans are! You think he'd be used to this by now since Admiral Twin's been touring with Hanson for over a month. The fans calmed down, and I got his autograph. I asked him if he's the one who writes up their travelogue on the Admiral Twin website, and he said yes. I told him I think his sense of humor is hysterial and love reading what he has to say. He seemed a little embarrassed, shy.
About the music they played on tape before the show: When they opened the gate, the played CCR for a long time. For those of you young enough to be uninitiated, Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the best rocknroll bands in the early '70's. Before the concert, they played "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (a cover) and a number of other songs by this group. We also heard a song by the Supremes, "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie, a few other oldies, and "My Girl," which the fans changed. Every time the words "my girl" came up, they would sing "Hanson" instead. It sounded so stupid.
When Admiral Twin came on, it was still light out. I could see them well through the binoculars. I like their music better the second time around. Brad, who plays guitar and saxophone, sang lead on a few songs. I think Jarrod, the drum usually sings lead. John Russell jumped all over with lead guitar. I don't know how he can play it like that. I can't believe they were still wearing wool suits. It's summertime! I thought the crowd reception was pretty lukewarm. I made up for it by clapping, woohooing, and dancing my feet off.
When Hanson started on stage, it was dark out. I never really got a good view with the binoculars. For one thing, the 2 adorable little boys next to me jumped up and down on the bench for half the show, and made it impossible to hold the binoculars still. My advice to myself and other fans in the future is to put the binoculars down and just keep dancing. It's more fun than hoping for a possible upclose sighting.
The music sounded great. Nice tight vocals.
They played a new cover for the first time. That was the guitar intro. I had heard at the soundcheck. It was Sunshine of Your Love, by Cream. They were really brave to try that; it's such a classic. No one can touch Eric Clapton on guitar or on the vocals for this one. Isaac sang lead. After I heard the Hanson version of this a few times, I'd probably like it. I think in a few years time, Zac's voice will be big enough to take this song on. His voice really seems suited to the more rocknroll tunes, such as Money. He sounded great on the intro. lead to Money, ditto with Taylor later on in the song.
I hope Hanson will continue to play new cover songs on tour. I think that helps them grow musically, especially when they try challenging classics such as the song by Cream. It's also a lot of fun for them and their fans. Hearing covers at the concerts has been one of the highlights for me, as an adult Hanson fan.
The guitars sounded beefier tonight. I think Isaac is getting better and better on guitar. I'm no guitar expert, but that's how I heard it.
More Than Anything - at Greatwoods, the Ike shriekers were in full earpierce during this song, and I couldn't hear most of it. At Hershey, I heard this song for the first time in all its beauty. The vocals were gorgeous, and the keyboard sounded great too. This was my favorite song of the night.
Good Lovin' - I just love the way they do this song.
During Look at You, Taylor pointed to the crowd several times. They played Summertime Blues. It wasn't as wild and crazy as at Greatwoods, I guess it's getting to be more routine. (This was my absolute favorite song at Greatwoods.) Isaac comes over to the keyboards as before, and Taylor grabbed the microphone and went up to the audience, having us sing on "1, 2, 3, 4, . . ."
Taylor seemed to do more running at Hershey and jumped up and down a lot. After the last song, he jumped down into the aisle in front of the stage and sloshed water from a bottle all over fans. He had a little trouble getting back onto the stage; he slid on his belly.
A few more comparisons between Greatwoods and Hershey: the fans were much louder at Greatwoods. There I could hear most of the music but missed quite a bit of it. Only once could I hear their speaking between songs. At Hershey, I heard almost every word of music and what they had to say between songs. The screaming was still loud though. Also this time they had supersoakers which they used several times during the show and at the end. They also threw some water balloons. At Hershey, none of them reached down into the crowd to shake hands with fans at any time like they did at Greatwoods. I wonder if they've had a few bad experiences since then.
The weather was not miserably hot like Greatwoods. It was quite warm and humid but not awful. Zac looked happier tonight. He didn't wilt at the end; at the end of the Greatwoods concert he had looked tired and miserable. They all looked like they were having fun tonight.
A few more notes on songs: at Hershey they added Madeline, dedicated to all the Madeline's in the audience! They also sang the Weird acapella at the end and did not sing Sometimes.
A few comments on fans: Before the show, "Elvis", dressed all in black, was looking for tickets. Wasn't that nice of him to come back from the great beyond just to see Hanson? At the show, a psycho Hanson cheerleader was directly in front of us. She was very loud, with many chants of ILUVYOUTAYLOR and much jumping up and down. I saw more teenage and grownup male Hanson fans at Hershey. As at Greatwoods, many of the fans sang along to every song.
For those of you who must know, here are some of the clothing details. I didn't catch all of it, such as shoes. Isaac began in a gray t-shirt and navy windpants with white stitching. Later he switched to a navy, striped, short-sleeve shirt with v-neck white t-shirt under it. He had his hair down for about 2 songs, then put it back.
Zac wore a maroon v-neck t-shirt, short sleeves. Maybe khaki pants? I had a hard time seeing him behind the drums. As at Greatwoods, whenever he sang lead or spoke, many Zac screamers screeched in unison. He wore his hair back in a ponytail the entire time.
Taylor had on a steelblue short-sleeve t-shirt, with a long-sleeve (knit?) white button down shirt over it, unbuttoned. Pants: gray or black corduroy? My daughter thought they were dark green velvet. After the first set he came back without the overshirt. He wore his hair down.
My daughter informs me Isaac wore black and white airwalks and Taylor wore some kind of boots. She couldn't see Zac's shoes.
We had a lot of fun at both concerts. I guess I enjoyed Greatwoods more, even with all the noise. It was their first U.S. concert on the tour, and it was just more wild and crazy. But both of them were immensely enjoyable. We're gearing up for our third and last Hanson concert this season. Two wasn't enough!
