(Brief
Bio) => Eric Benet, a contemporary R&B singer with
heavy Gospel/Retro Soul influences, from Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, started his musical career in a vocal group
called "Benet" with his sister and cousin. The
group signed with Capitol Records and released an album
entitled "BENET" in 1992. However, that was
when his record company was right in the middle of the
corporate upheaval and the album was completely ignored
(sold only 70,000 copies). Disappointed, he left the
music scene. Eric came back as a solo singer shortly afterward, signing to Warner Bros. Records and releasing his debut album "True To Myself" in November 1996. He went to Japan in 1996 and 1997 to promote his solo debut album and to throw some shows (in Tokyo and Osaka). He has quite a big fanbase in Japan and his song "I'll Be There" was used for a nation-wide cigarette commercial on Japanese TV. Eric released his second album "A Day In The Life" in April (March in Japan) 1999. The first single "Georgy Porgy" off this new album became one of the most-frequently-played songs on the radio in the US this spring and a lot of people have started considering him as the hottest male singer in the contemporary R&B music scene. (Congratulations, Eric! Your patience and hard-work finally paid off. - Teo) Eric is based in California now and goes back and forth between LA, the industry's capital, and his home Wisconsin. He has a daughter named India. |

-Comments-
I personally met Eric Benet and his band members (his guitarist Freddy Fox, etc.) and had a chat with them in July 1997 in Tokyo. Eric seemed to be a nice guy, soft-spoken & very polite. I go to a lot of R&B concerts, and, I'm telling you, Eric's show was probably the best of all the shows I've ever been to (musically). However, I think that he should stop taking off his clothes on stage. It's too obvious that he is using his chest and navel to sell his music, which makes real music lovers frown upon him. Women may go crazy about it, but he won't get any respect from male listeners who go to his concerts and really want to enjoy his great music (if he keeps doing that). Eric is a very talented singer with an incredible voice. I'm sure that he can sell his music without using any gimmicks. (Teo) |
