Capa do compacto SUYL parte 1
Muito
se especulou a respeito do lançamento do 1º compacto do segundo
álbum das SPICE GIRLS. Ele seria lançado numa data em que
certamente não atingiria o sucesso que atingiu. Estamos falando
de semanas após a trágica morte da Princesa Diana. Neste
mesmo instante foi lançado o compacto de tributo à Princesa,
gravado por Elton John e cujo as rendas iriam para o fundo de caridade
que era administrado pela princesa. Devido a esse lamentável fato,
Spice Up Your Life (SUYL) 
teve
seu lançamento adiado.
O lançamento finalmente ocorreu em meados de outubro de 1997. Na verdade, não chegou a atingir o sucesso esperado pelas garotas. Vendeu bem menos do que se esperava, o que acarretou na demissão do empresário Simon Fuller. Devido ao "fracasso" inicial, a imprensa especulou muito o fato de que a banda estava para se separar, mas ficou mesmo nos rumores, pois depois de algumas semanas, SUYL decolou de acordo com as paradas européias.
A música
mistura o estilo pop dançante das SPICE com batidas claramente latinas,
tipo salsa, merengue com pitadas de lambada e até o nosso tradicional
samba para gringo ver. A letra trata da interação entre as
garotas com o mundo, na visão delas, além de convocar a todos,
de todos os sexos, idades e etnias para 
uma
grande confraternização, bem ao estilo Girl Power de ser.
A faixa inédita é Spice
Invaders que é uma conversa
meio maluca e descontraída das garotas.
Os
remixes são bem variados. Morales substitui algumas batidas de teclado
e acrescenta um tempero mais caliente e latino em seus remixes. A versão
Cuba Libre de Murk brinca com as vozes das garotas, excluindo algumas em
determinados pontos da música. Vários acordes são
adicionados e até trechos 
mais
techno podem ser verificados em ambos os remixes da parte 2.
A crítica
que se diz especializada, para variar, não gostou muito do compacto.
Mas temos que lembrar que a música pop não tem muito compromissos
com seguimentos e rótulos, é apenas expressão de sentimentos
(todos eles) e ritmos, dançantes ou melódicos. Já
os críticos da loja virtual CDnow
disseram que esse se trata do melhor compacto da carreira das meninas,
já que se trata de SPICE GIRLS e pop music. É conferir para
tirar a prova. A versão americana é igual a parte 1 britânica
e a capa também.
