Master of puppets

Without question Metallica's finest album, and that says something. The extended, progressive compositions (eight songs in just under one hour) vary enough in texture, tempo, and mood to hold interest throughout; taken as a whole, the album is a masterpiece, and the first half in particular is absolutely flawless. The subject matter is fairly cohesive; in general, Master of Puppets addresses the misuse of power in various ways. Even though it follows much the same pacing as Ride the Lightning, Master is more focused, and the band sounds more in control of its innovations. It stands as one of the best heavy metal albums ever recorded; some critics have called it the best.
