Ride the lightning
An incredibly ambitious follow-up, Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. The material ranges from blasts of fury ("Fight Fire with Fire") to tight, concise groove-rockers ("For Whom the Bell Tolls," "Escape") to the extended title track, but perhaps the strongest single song is the slow, haunting, partially acoustic suicide lament "Fade to Black," which also illustrates the band's move away from traditional metal theatrics toward more serious fare. While it is a transitional album, Ride the Lightning's experiments push the boundaries of metal in consistently intriguing ways.
