100 CLUB 27/08/98 REVIEWS HERE

100 Club Oxford Street - Thursday 27th August 1998
We went to The 100 Club rather early. The club was a bit smaller than I thought… There were two support bands on first ….. then what we had been waiting for … The Dandys ! They started with one of the new ones, "Lowlife" this was proceeded by "I Just Wanna Be Loved", coo, it was beautiful.. Andy strutting his stuff as only he knows how.
"Its Easy", followed, again we were impressed with this one. Then the classic "Dirty Weekend", I never get fed up of hearing that or "English Country Garden" which followed. Everyone joined in singing along to these.
And more new stuff …"The Way the Story Goes", "Tomorrow People" is so brilliant, that bassline is just fantastic ! and those futuristic synths courtesy of Mike, Ben’s solo was splendid !
Then we had our socks blown off ( I wasn’t wearing any though ~ G) by "Karoke", an excellent disco fuelled song emphasised by those hi-hats from Bryan, wow !! Disco divas will go wild for this one!
And to finish of the evening on the right pitch the ever wondrous "You Make Me Wanna Scream", There were many an exchange in glances and grins. What no Johnny Foxtrot ! No !
Their show was good, but the vocals were not very clear at all, Andy having problems with the sound and not being able to hear himself much, despite much gesturing to the sound man to turn up his monitors.
Now what will Reading have to offer ??

THE 100 CLUB 27/08/98 - REVIEW
A warm summer night, fighting my way through the crowd in Oxford Street to the historic 100 Club that has housed bands such as the Sex Pistols through to Suede - intimate but over-rated as I am sure the Dandys will testify, because every band I have seen there has had problems with the PA system.
Large columns block the front of the stage, but that doesn’t prove too much of a problem as the gig hasn’t had a large turn out. A pre-Reading warm-up that hasn’t had much publicity, the gig is filled with a mixture of die-hard fans, and those that came to see the support bands.
The Dandys gave their usual 110% and it is frustrating to see a band, honing their craft, writing new and exciting songs and still being ignored or dismissed by the media.
A showcase tonight for the new songs, the exact replica of which will be played at Reading. We were treated to the excellent "Karoke", upbeat and funkier with an almost disco beat and taking a different direction; a friend commented that she though it was a cover of an Iggy Pop song - but I don’t have enough knowledge of Iggy Pop to either confirm or deny.
"Tomorrow People"; another new song just blew me away. Andy is destined to become one of the great songwirters of our time, already a very talented lyricist, Andrew’s lyrics become more thought provoking by the moment and are a true reflection of our lives and the times we live in. The harmonies and solo’s work very well and its has an excellent hookline.
Andrew confirmed after the gig that the song was inspired by the programme of the same name that I’d seen in my youth. Andrew had seen the re-runs on Satellite TV which made him fell old !
"It’s Easy" and "Lowlife" were new songs that also impressed the crowd, although that is not to say that they neglected to play the favourites such as "Dirty Weekends" which never fails to get my adrenalin going and "English Country Garden", always a crowd pleaser !
Shock !, horror !, no "Johnny Foxtrot" ! The band decided not to play this as Andy was going hoarse trying to make himself heard despite the continuous gesturing to try and get the sound system in tune with their sound.
I know the Dandys felt disappointed by the gig due to the small crowd and bad PA, but all I can say is that the Dandys at their supposedly "worst" still gives me a buzz that many, established bands at their "best" fail to do.
