Basque lyrics

Agur Jaunak

Agur jaunak
Jaunak agur
Agur t'erdi

Denak jainkoa
Iñak gire
Zuek eta
Bai gu ere

Agur jaunak agur
Agur t'erdi
Hemen gera
Agur jaunak

Goodbye sirs

Goodbye sirs
Sirs goodbye
To all of you

God, all
Want to say
Goodbye to you
And also to us

Goodbye sirs goodbye
To all of you
From the ones that remain here
Goodbye sirs

This is a typical Basque song, traditional. Every Basque must know it. It was sang in funerals mainly and to important people. "Agur" means "goodbye", but also "hello" in old Basque. So it can also be a welcome song.

Boga boga

Boga, boga mariñela
-Mariñela-
Joan biardegu urrutira
Bai Indietara
Bai Indietara

Ez det nik ikusiko
Zure playa ederra
Agur Ondarroako
Itxaso bazterra
Mariñela, (¡boga!) mariñela

Sail sail

Sail, sail, sailman
-Sailman-
Very far you are to go
To the Indias
To the Indias

That beautiful beach
I'll never forget
Goodbye Ondarroa's corner
I don't know if I'll be back
Sailman (sail!) sailman

This song comes from the Basque folklore. It was composed for those men that had to go far away to get some money for their families. Mostly, they went to the USA (Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyoming ) as sheperds and to every country in South America. Columbus proposed the king Ferdinando and the queen Isabella to find a better way to go to "the Indias". "The Indias" are all the Asian Countries that sell species to European merchants. But then, Columbus discovered what we call "America" today. However, for the last century America was still called "The Indias" by Basque people. Today, when in Basque we speak about America we say "The Americas". Why in plural? Absolutely no clue!

Eusko gudariak gera
Euskadi askatzeko
Gerturik daukagu odola
Bere alde emateko

(...)

Irrintzi bat entzun da
Mendi tontorrean
Goazen gudari danok
Ikurrina atzean

Little one

We are the Basques warriors
We are here to save the
Basque Country
We'll give everything for it

(...)

We've heard a scream
On the surroundings of the mountains
Let's go all of us warriors
Behind our flag

History of this song: This is the nationalist anthem for the Basques. "Gudari" is the Basque that fought in the Spanish civil war for the freedom of the Basque Country. The Ikurrina is our beautiful flag!
