Sergio's father Victor teaches professional golf at Cub de Golf del Mediterraneo, and Sergio started playing golf at age 3. By the time he was 12, he has become club champion. At the age of 14, he set a record as the youngest player to make the cut in a European Tour event, the 1995 Turespaņa Open Meditarranea. As an amateru he won 19 events, and also one professional, the Catalonian Open at 17. He made the cut in 12 of the 18 European Tour events, before he turned pro on April 21st 1999. At the time his handicap was +5.6, the lowest in Europe.

On his sixth start as a professional he won the Murphy's Irish Open, and the world really noticed him when he chased Tiger Woods at the PGA Tournament. He finished one stroke behind Tiger, but what people will remember from the 1999 PGA is definatly Sergios "shot-from-behind-the-tree" at 16, and the following sprint to see where it landed. (On the green of course!). That shot was named shot of the year in Europe. Then he became the youngest every player to play at the Ryder Cup where he did really well. With Jesper Parenvik he only lost half a point out of 4 possible, but sadly he lost 4 and 3 in the singles to Jumes Furyk. Sergio went on to win the Linde German Masters in a play-off, and Captained the Spanish team who won the Alfred Dunhill Cup at St. Andrews. When you think about it, theres no wonder Sergio was named Rookie of the Year in Europe.

Ever since Sergio turned pro, he has gotten many fans who love him for his energy, fun-loving personality and not to mention skill on the course. His many female fans (including myself) also appreciate his very good looks. ;) We LUV you Sergio!!!
