What is a Freak?
Some people may be offended by the term "freak". I was too, at first. I'm not using "freak" as a derrogatory term for people who are different. James Marks (pictured below) defines a freak as any person who isn't a prep and doesn't listen to rap or teeny-booper, top 40s crap. The Freaks are a very limited, yet very proud groups of people. The term "freak" was coined to describe punks, goths, skaters, and grungies (the people with the long hair and baggy clothers who listen to "alternative" music) a few years ago. Because these groups of people went against the grain by listening to different music, dressing in different clothing, and basically defying the status quo, the "normal" people labeled them "freaks". But, as proof that these people were truly different, they didn't let being labeled get them down. They embraced it. They started refering to themselves as freaks, much to the surprise of the "normal" people. They wore their name proudly. Soon, it was "cool" to be a freak, as well as a loser, a poseur, and an idiot.
The History of Freak Appreciation Day
Freak Appreciation Day started in October of 1998. Friday the 13th is the "unluckiest" day of the year, and the fear that it puts in "normal" people's hearts is the very reason why it is a favorite among the Freaks. So it is only fitting that Freak Appreciation Day fall on every Friday the 13th. This is a day when we take a momment to say "We're different, and we like it!"
Want to be part of this dedication to Freakdom?
It's very easy to be apart of Freak Appreciation. Just e-mail me. Pictures of yourself would be best. But anything else you can think of to help out with Freak Appreciation would work. Anything I get will be posted on this page.
I've been advertising this whole freak thing on the main page forever, but submissions have been slow coming. To date, I've gotten about 3 legitimate ones. So I had to follow the example of my punk fore-fathers. Since no one came to me, I had to go to them and find my own freaks. Most of the following people are friends of mine from school or people I talk to online, and some appear a few times. Cheers!
These guys are rocking out with their bands. If you're in a band, feel free to send me your picture.
