Axe Master: David Gilmour

David Jon Gilmour was born in Cambridge, England, on March 6, 1946. Growing upin Granchester Meadoes, on the banks of the River Cam, he left for Cambridge's College of Arts and Technology after high school. Here he met Syd Barret, with whom he held open jams during their lunch hour.

During this time, in 1963, he formed the band Joker's Wild, later renamed The Flowers. Within a year, they had recorded a five song album, 100 copies were made, which were all sold. Needless to say, these albums are quite the collector's item now.

In '67, he left The Flowers, and after a brief project with The Bullitts, he joined Pink Floyd as a stand in for his old friend Syd Barrett. Soon after this, Barrett left the band due to mental illness.

In the next 26 years, he released 18 albums with Pink Floyd, plus two solo albums: David Gilmour and About Face. Each one of these is a literal work of art.
