Chapter One

Back in Chicago, Heather and I were getting all of our things ready to leave the next day One of the things that we have in common is the fact our parents are never around; Heather’s were lawyers and mine owned a business together, so we depended on our circle of friends for company. Our flight was set to leave tomorrow afternoon. I was on my way to Heather’s house when I was stopped by the phone ringing.

“Hello?”

“Hey girl, guess who.”

“Kit, wassup girl?”

“Nothing much, so are you all ready to come down to sunny Florida?”

“I can’t wait and I’m pretty much done packing.”

“What’s Heather up to?”

“Same as me I guess, I was just on my way to her place.”

“Oh, okay.”

“So how’s Jen and Linz?”p> “They’re good; Jen had a huge fight with Mike and they’re not together anymore.”

“I never liked him anyway.”

“Me neither.”

“Well, I better get going.”

“Alright, tell her I said hi and I’ll see you guys tomorrow.”

“Okay, talk to ya later.”

“Later.”

After I hung up with Kit, I grabbed my bags and made my way to Heather’s. When I got there, I found Heather in her room with her stereo blasting Britney Spear’s cd. I walked over and tapped her on the shoulder. She jumped and turned around. I went over and turned her stereo down.

“When did you get here?”

“A few minutes ago; Shawn let me in…aren’t you done packing yet?”

“I’m just double-checking some stuff.”

“Well, hurry up, we’re going out tonight to celebrate our liberation!”

“Okay, I’ll be ready in a few minutes.”

“I’ll be downstairs.”

“No flirting with my brother!”

“Kiss my ass.”

I walked downstairs and into their family room. I started to watch tv when Heather’s older brother, Shawn, came in and sat in the chair across from me.

“Hey Kae, I haven’t seen you in a while.”

“Well, I’ve been pretty busy these past few months.”

“Oh…well, you look good.”

I felt his eyes move up and down my body. I was wearing a black mini and a red tube top. “Thanks, so do you.” Shawn was my first real crush. He had really dark brown hair and beautiful green eyes. He was definitely good-looking and a sweetheart on top of that. We had this thing where we were always flirting and cuddling with eachother but we were never a couple. All of that ended when he went off to NYU last year.

“Are you guys going out tonight?”

“Yeah, I thought we should spend our last night in Chicago having some fun.”

“You know, I really missed you Kae.”

Before I could reply, Heather walked into the room. She was wearing fitted black capris and a cropped silver tank top.

“So, what did I miss?” she said giving me one of her looks.

“Let’s just go okay?” I said pushing her toward the door.

We got into my black Escalade and drove to club Liquid. It was Friday night and the place was packed. After we got in we immediately hit the dance floor as they started to play Eminem. We started grinding with random guys like we always did and we were having a blast. After dancing for about an hour straight, we found a table and got something to drink.

“Oh yeah, Kit called me earlier tonight.”

“Really, is everything ready down there?”

Instead of staying in dorms, we were staying in a condo with Kit, Linz, and Jen. We agreed to help pay for rent and plus I thought it would be much better than staying in those dorm rooms.

“Yeah, she’s going to meet us at the gate tomorrow.”

We finally decided to head back to Heather’s house around 3am. I was going to stay at Heather’s since I felt too tired to drive back to my house. Heather went straight to her room and fell asleep when we got back. I followed her, preparing to do the same. Before I laid down, I noticed a familiar picture on Heather’s dresser. I picked it up and smiled. It was a picture of all five of us taken about four years ago. We all looked so young…so happy. Jen is the oldest, 21, she’ll be a junior this fall and she was the strength of the group, the one we all looked up to for guidance. Kit and Linz, both 20, are going to be sophomores; they were the clowns who made everyday a fun and exciting day. And then there’s Heather and I; we’re 18 but I’m older by four months. Heather was the peacemaker; she hated seeing people upset. And me, well, I’m the laid-back one; I’m the one that reminds everyone to relax and just live it up.

“I can’t believe we’re all going to be together again,” I thought.

I put the picture back and laid down. As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about how much all of our lives were going to change after tomorrow; hopefully for the better.
