Per questa pagina ho l'onore di cedere la parola a un diretto protagonista della vicenda dei PATW, vale a dire uno dei due fondatori del gruppo, il tastierista-programmatore Eckart Debusmann, detto ILFO per gli amici. Ho potuto rivolgergli una serie di domande sulla nascita, i componenti, la produzione e lo scioglimento del gruppo, e la risposta contiene non poche notizie curiose che credo siano per lo più inedite. Non posso che proporvela integralmente, nella versione inglese dietro consenso dell'autore e di seguito nella traduzione di Paola Comelli. 

             PATW: 
             London based English-German Project with EDWIN HIND (vocals) from Liverpool
             and ILFO (keyboards/programming) from Munich/Berlin. EDDIE was  the ex-singer of
             an English band called VIRGIN DANCE. All songs were written by EDDIE and ILFO
             except EAST RIVER, which was a cover version by the BRECKER BROTHERS. On "We
             Need Protection" there were some additional lyrics by a guy called BASTOW. EDDIE
             and ILFO were brought together by their managers RAY DUNN and P.A.R.C. MUSIC
             after CBS RECORDS (now SONY MUSIC) got interested in the two of them. ILFO had
             been working on "We Need Protection" and was looking for a vocalist. Among other
             people there was also a demo recorded with a singer called TERRY who later became
             famous as TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY and who also inspired to some ideas for the
             song. But somehow the demo did not work out as desired and the next recording with
             EDDIE satisfied the recording company more. Thus the band PATW was formed in
             1985. PATW was mainly a studio project. Some of the studio musicians (like the
             drummer Cliff Hewitt of Apollo 440) also appeared on the videos and TV-shows.

             Publishing was on Carlin Music and MCA. 

             "We Need Protection" was a huge hit in Europe, especially in Germany and 
             Italy, where it became Number 1 and stayed in the TOP 10 for 13 weeks. The 
             band split up because of internal personality problems and problems with the 
             managers and the producer. Shortly before the split the single with the 
             ironic title "Success" and the album "The Doors Are Open" were released. 
             Because of the split the album wasn't properly promoted by the record 
             company and is therefore not known very well. It is only available on the 
             second hand market nowadays [in realtà sembra che sia diponibile in CD nel
             catalogo Portrait, come mi ha segnalato un attento lettore].
             "We Need Protection" has been re-released on compilation albums "One Shot '80"
             and "Pop & Wave Volume 5: The Neverending 80's". 
             For a while EDDIE made some recordings with a band called 16-BIT and ILFO worked
             as producer and sound engineer in JAMESTOWN STUDIOS (owned by DRUM
             THEATRE's KENT BRAINERD) in London. He now lives in Munich.

            PATW: 
                Un gruppo nato a Londra su di un progetto anglo-tedesco tra EDWIN HIND (voce) di
                Liverpool e ILFO (tastiere/programmatore) di Monaco. EDDIE era l'ex cantante del
                gruppo inglese Virgin Dance. Tutte le canzoni sono state scritte da EDDIE e ILFO, ad
                eccezione di EAST RIVER, una rivisitazione del pezzo dei BRECKER BROTHERS. In
                "We Need Protection" c'erano poi anche parti scritte da un certo BASTOW. Furono i
                loro manager RAY DUNN e P.A.R.C. MUSIC a far costituire il gruppo, dopo che la
                CBS RECORDS (oggi SONY MUSIC) si era interessata a loro.  

                ILFO aveva lavorato a "We Need Protection" e cercava un vocalista. Tra gli altri, una
                versione demo era stata registrata da un cantante di nome TERRY, più tardi conosciuto
                come TERENCE TRENT D'ARBY, che diede alcuni suggerimenti per il pezzo.  
                Tuttavia quel demo non soddisfaceva pienamente i discografici, cosa che invece
                avvenne con EDDIE. Così nel 1985  si formarono i PATW, principalmente un progetto
                nato in studio. Alcuni dei musicisti impegnati in  quel progetto (come il batterista
                CLIFF HEWITT degli Apollo 440) fecero apparizione anche nei video e nei passaggi in
                TV.

                I dischi furono pubblicati da Carlin Music e dalla  MCA. 

                "We need protection"  è stato un grosso successo in Europa, soprattutto in Germania e
                in Italia, dove rimase in  prima posizione nelle classifiche di vendita per 13 settimane.  
                Il gruppo si sciolse a causa di problemi interpersonali con i managers e i produttori.
                Poco prima dello scioglimento venne pubblicato il singolo "Success", dal titolo ironico,
                e l'album "The Doors Are Open" . 
                A causa dello scioglimento non ci fu una vera e propria promozione dell'album, e così
                quest'ultimo non è molto conosciuto. Lo si può trovare nei mercatini di seconda mano.  
                "We Need Protection"  è stato inserito nelle compilation  
                 "One Shot '80" e "Pop & Wave Volume 5: The Neverending 80's". 
                EDDIE per un po' ha registrato pezzi con il gruppo 16-bit, mentre ILFO ha lavorato
                come produttore e ingegnere del suono nei  JAMESTOWN STUDIOS (di proprietà di
                Kent Brainerd, dei Drum Theatre), a Londra. Ora vive a Monaco.
