The Bloody Wanker Interview with Tilt

Okay, here goes our second interview. We're getting better, but we're still not quite there. Alex has come to my rescue again, in fact it's really his interview with me butting in here and there. Cinder was kind of in a hurry because she was hungry and wanted to eat before the show and she had nine other interviews to do. We tried to get in as many questions as we could. Thanks to Tilt and especially Alex. If anyone has any comments or questions that could be used for a future interview, let me know. We try not to edit much out, it's pretty much transcribed word for word. The interview took place at Coney Island High on August 27th. SARA*

Bloody Wanker- Alex Sanchez and Sara Sharf
Tilt- Cinder Block, Vince Camacho, Jeffrey Bischoff

Bloody Wanker- Who are you and what do you play?
Cinder- I'm Cinder, I'm in Tilt and I sing.
Vince- I'm Vince and I play drums for Tilt.
Bloody Wanker- Your age, height, and weight?
Cinder- I'm a classic, I think I'm like 5..., I'm 2" taller and a few years younger than Madonna- put it that way. I weigh like a 125 or something.
Vince- I think I'm 5, I think I'm 5'10" and I weigh like a 150 pounds.
Cinder- Did I just say two inches shorter than Madonna, I'm 2" taller than Madonna. And several years younger (she laughs a wicked laugh).

Bloody Wanker- Just the who, what, where's and why's of Tilt. You know, how long you've been around, where you're from and all that stuff.
Vince- Uh, let's see...
Cinder- I'm from Nebraska, I moved to California, I've been in eight different
bands in 13 years and Tilt's the best one. Now I live in Oakland.
Vince- Yeah, Cinder kind of found me and uh, actually through a softball game one time, a softball game amongst punk rockers. And then Jeff forced me to play with him. And then after a certain amount of months, we just kind of couldn't stand the sight of each other, but we just couldn't leave each other either, so...
Sara- Were some of your members from Crimpshrine?
Vince- Ah yeah, the original bass player was in Crimpshrine, Pete Rypins, who's still a dear friend of mine. But, I don't know, these days he does more golfing, you know, than anything else.

Bloody Wanker- When did the t-shirt company start and how's it doing?
Cinder- Uh, it started in 1989. I was kind of squatting in this warehouse and I had no other way to make a living. I just went out on Telegraph Avenue, which is kind of the Berkeley equivilant to St. Mark's and I was selling, like, four designs I made on the street, kept putting money back in. And it became the monster it is today.

Sara- Hi (Jeffrey appears).
Jeffrey- Hello, I'm Jeffrey.
Cinder- He plays guitar.
Jeffrey- I play guitar.
Bloody Wanker- And you're how old, how tall and how much do you weigh?
Jeffrey- In what order? I'm 143, that's how old I am. I'm 6 pounds, no I'm six years old, no I already said I was that. No, I'm 5'11 and 3/4.
Cinder- 5'11" and 3/4 (she mimmicks).
Sara- Well, I'm 4'11" and 3/4 (why am I so proud of this?).
Jeffrey- That 3/4, that counts, you know. I'm almost 6 foot, but not quite. If I only had a 1/4", I'd be in the same...
Cinder- But you've been shrinking.
Vince- You used to be taller than me, bbut not for much longer though.
Cinder- He's shrinking.
Jeffrey- I am shrinking.

Bloody Wanker- How's the tour going and do you have any amusing tour stories?
Cinder- It's doing great.
Bloody Wanker- How was Warped Tour?
Jeffrey- We didn't play the Warped Tour this year.
Cinder- We just played one show in San Francisco.
Bloody Wanker- What was it like doing it last year?
Cinder- I didn't like it, 'cause... I mean, these guys liked it, but I didn't like it so much.
Jeffrey- I didn't like it 'cause she didn't like it.
Cinder- 'Cause I like playing in little dives, the audience is more...there's more of a connection with the crowd.
Alex- In the dark, not out in the sunlight.
Cinder- In the dark, yeah.
Jeffrey- The show we played in San Francisco was really dusty, but it was fun.
Vince- Yeah, there were better bands this year than last year. Well, not to be unfair to the bands last year, but...

Bloody Wanker- If you could be anyone, other than yourselves, who would it be and why?
Jeffrey- Jerry Lewis 'cause Jerry Lewis is cool. He's really funny. They were so huge, him and Martin, they were so huge. Do you like Jerry Lewis (he looks at me)?
Sara- (I nod)
Jeffrey- He's so great, he's my idol. I wish I can be like him.
Cinder- I'd be Mia Farrow because she gets to adopt all kinds of kids and live in New York.
Vince- (Their roadie interrupts and makes some sort of Igor like noise) I'd be our roadie, Chris, because he doesn't give a fuck.
Chris- Roadie #2, to be exact. And let me tell you a little story about...
Cinder- He's 16 years old, he sucks his thumb, we have a note from his mother and he drinks beer on the fucking street.
Chris- Ya de ya de ya de....
Cinder- And he wears a puppy backpack.
Chris- Ya de fucking ya da.
Cinder- Get out of here, Chris. I want to fucking do this interview and eat.
Joe (another roadie)- Where's your backpack (to Cinder)?
Cinder- Oh this, I like this one better, that one's a present for someone.
Joe- All right.
Chris- See you later.

Bloody Wanker- Some of your favorite bands or cool bands that you've met on tour?
Cinder- V. Card is pretty cool, we played with them in Boston last night. They're...
Jeffrey- Yeah, they're a Boston band. I haven't discovered them until last night. They were pretty cool.
Cinder- Yeah.
Vince- I thought Lifetime was pretty cool, we played with them. And, I don't know, we played with a band called 30foottall. I was listening to one song they have on a comp. today, they're pretty cool too.
Jeffrey- They're from, uh...
Alex- 30footFall from Texas.
Jeffrey- Yeah, there you go. You've got your finger on the pulse, don't you (everyone laughs).

Bloody Wanker- How do you feel about the popularity of punk culture and fashion in '96.
Jeffrey- Well what I have to say about that is, punk's not dead, it's just lying face down in the gutter. And it's not really dead, it just smells bad. It's a damn shame, I think. So, that's what I think.
Cinder- It's mainstream.
Vince- I think Madonna was the first one to bring punk fashion to the malls, so why don't we go back and blame her.
Jeffrey- Fashion, for sure, you know.
Cinder- Plus, it seems like when I got into punk rock it was all the fucking geeky people and the misfits that weren't very popular. Now it's the popluar kids. Now it's like the jocks and the cute, good looking kids and the popular kids are punk now, when back then, it was the other way around- us ugly, fucking geeks, had too much imagination to just fuck cheerleaders and drink beer all night.
Jeffrey- But the good side is that it has inspired a lot of people to just go out and do stuff. You know, and that's inspiring. There's a lot more people that are just doing things, like starting, you know, whatever, starting bands, starting fucking clubs, starting record labels, starting fanzines, starting businesses, whatever you know. Rather than just like sitting there and being complacent, you know. So that's cool.
Cinder- Next question.

Bloody Wanker- Okay, what pisses you off most about living in the U.S.?
Cinder- Rampant greed.
Vince- The police. The absolute tyranny of the police. 'Cause we were just in Canada and they were just so much more laid back. And people just aren't afraid of their own police....
(Some guy Bruce interrupts now, they call him nature boy and start making fun of him because apparantly he went to Coney Island looking for Coney Island High).
Cinder- Next question (she's really getting impatient).
Alex- Last question, best and worst thing about being on the road?
Jeffrey- The best is that we get to meet all you nice people out there, it's really a lot of fun. It's just a gas. The bad thing is that I neglect my business at home and all my employees hate me because I'm making them work harder because I'm not there. Actually, I'm not making them, they do it at their own free will.
Cinder- The worst thing is missing my kitty cat, the best thing is meeting new kitty cats on the road.
Vince- Dirty laundry and the van, palmade on the glass.
Sara- That's the best thing (being sarcastic, in case you couldn't tell).
Vince- (Laughs) That's the worst thing, well that's kind of the best thing too. You kind of miss this stuff when you're home.
Cinder- Yeah, it's like seeing New York through a roadie's pomade... smeared on the window.
Vince- I love New York though, I love coming here. I love the East Coast.
Jeffrey- He comes here during Christmas just to get into the spirit...
(Cinder interrupts to say they have another interview to do).
Bloody Wanker- Thanks.
Cinder- All right, thank you.
Echoes- Thanks a lot.
