Our punk rock woman of the month is none other than Cinder Block, the well educated and very beautifullead singer for"Tilt." Tilt has been one of my favorite bands for a little over a year now. They were brought into the scene in 1992 and broke up in 1996. However, they got back together in early '97, which is good for me or else I might have never heard them.
They are an East Bay band from Berkeley, California. They have six CD's titled Tilt, Play Cell, 'Til it Kills, Worse to Bad, and their newest, Collect'em All. From hear say entirely, it seems that they are going to be on a compilation tribute to X coming out in December, a Fat Wreck Chords compilation in 1999, and are coming out with their own CD also in '99. They played in San Fransisco at the Warped Tour just recently, but are not going on tour anymore for the rest of '98.
We chose Cinder Block for our punk rock woman of the month for a lot of seperate reasons. One, of course, is that she's just so damn punk. She doesn't seem to be exactly the type of girl to have played with Barbie when she was little. Also, her lyrics aren't just brain-dead, kill everyting lyrics that some punk bands seem to have. They're full of opinions and ideas, emotions and agitations, and most noticable, a very extensive vocabulary. I can guarantee you, you'll be pulling out the dictionary next thing you know. Along with this, her voice is strong enough to compete with the thrashing guitars and intricate drum rythms, but still feminine.
Furthermore, as punk as she is, she still expresses her femininity, which is one thing that just makes me love her more. I'm not a feminazi, but I do believe that everyone has the right to be appreciated equally, and that there are not many women in punk rock. Therefore, I give you Cinder Block, punk rock woman of the month.
