Stretch out
Let's start off in true surf style by double picking. Stretch out. Let's start off in true surf style by double picking the low-E string (Ex. 1). Staying on the bottom string keeps the tone fat and meaty, and helps you maintain picking consistency. Fret all the notes with your first finger. Slide from one note to the next, and drive your picking hand hard. Be primitive!
Ex. 2 takes us into the guitar's middle register. Fretted on the A, D, and G strings, this lyrical melody is full of hammers, pulls, and slides. Playing up and down the strings not only brings on thunder, as in Ex. 1, but also lets you take explore the guitar's sweet, melodic possibilities. For maximum sustain, try this with an E-Bow.
Move it. Ex. 3 blends wide leaps and open strings with a little dissonance. It also illustrates how you can smooth out your single-string phrasing with quick hammers and pulls. Ex. 4 pushes the concept one step further, exploring more complex rhythms and adding a few tones from outside the key. |
