1809 Edgar Poe is born in Boston on January 19th. 1810 Rosalie Poe, sister of Edgar, is born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 20th. 1811 Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar's mother, dies in Richmond, Virginia, on December 8th. 1812 Poe is baptized on January 7th by the Reverend John Buchanan and christened Edgar Allan Poe, with the Allans as godparents. Poe's sister Rosalie is baptized on September 3rd as Rosalie MacKenzie Poe after her adoption by William and Jane Scott MacKenzie. 1815 John and Frannie Allan, with Poe and Frannie's younger sister Ann Moore Valentine (Nancy) leave for England on June 22nd. 1816 Poe attends the boarding school of the Dubourgs in London, where he is known as Master Allan. 1818 Poe attends the Manor House School in London, and is known again as Edgar Allan 1820 Poe and the Allan family return to America from England on July 22nd. 1822 Poe's cousin and future wife Virginia Clemm is born in Baltimore on August 22nd. 1825 John Allan inherits a large sum of money upon his uncle's death. He purchases a huge brick mansion in Richmond, where the family relocates. 1827 Poe and John Allan argue over Poe's gambling debts. Poe leaves college and enters the army under the name Edgar A. Perry. Poe publishes Tamerlane and Minor Poems, his first book. 1829 Poe is promoted to sergeant major. Frannie Allan dies in Richmond on February 28th. Poe applies to West Point. His second book is published. 1830 John Allan remarries. Poe enters West Point. 1831 Poe is court-martialed on February 8th after refusing to attend class. His poetry collection Poems by Edgar A. Poe is published. William Henry Leonard Poe, Poe's older brother, dies of tuberculosis in Baltimore on August 1st. 1834 John Allan dies in Richmond, Virginia on March 27th. Poe receives no inheritance. 1835 Poe applies for a teaching position in Boston. Poe's grandmother Elizabeth Cairnes Poe dies on July 7th. 1836 Poe and Virginia Clemm marry on May 16th 1840 Poe's Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque is published. 1841 "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is published. 1842 Poe meets Charles Dickens in Philadelphia on March 6th. 1845 "The Raven" is published 1847 Virginia Poe dies of tuberculosis in January in New York. 1848 Poe becomes engaged to Sarah Helen Whitman, but the engagement is broken off when Poe breaks his promise to quit drinking. 1849 On August 27th, Poe signs a plege with Sons of Temperance to quit drinking. On September 27th Poe arrived in Baltimore for the last time. On October 3rd, Poe is found raving and nearly unconscious outside a tavern. On October 8th, Poe dies and is buried in his grandfather's lot. 1875 On November 17th, the Memorial Grave of Edgar Allan Poe, containing the exhumed remains of Poe and Maria Clemm, is dedicated in Baltimore. Ten years later, the remains of Poe's wife Virginia are brought to Baltimore from New York and placed in the Memorial Grave with those of her and her mother. |
