HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Dec. 16, 1997--

Film Debuts at No. 1 in the United States, With Box Office Take at $39.2 Million

"Scream 2" scared the competition at the box office this week, pulling in an estimated $39.2 million to become the biggest-opening film of its genre of all time.

Opening to 3,112 screens nationwide, "Scream 2" also broke the record for the biggest December opening ever.

At the same time, "She Said," the Capitol/Dimension Records "Scream 2" soundtrack contribution by alternative hitmakers Collective Soul, was the No. 1 most added record at rock radio out of the box.

A video of "She Said," directed by Paul Andresen, is set to hit outlets next week. Natives of Stockbridge, Ga., Collective Soul first hit it big in 1994 with the single "Shine," which spent eight weeks atop the AOR charts, tying the record set 15 years earlier by Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall."

Other current radio tracks from the album include "Suburban Life" by hot new Capitol hip-hop signing Kottonmouth Kings, "Scream" by ace-indie rapper Master P, featuring Silkk The Shocker -- both in strong rotation at MTV -- and the soon-to-be-released "She's Always in My Hair," a song from The Artist, newly recorded by soulster D'Angelo.

The quick success of "She Said" parallels that of the Dimension Films screen thriller which opened Dec. 12 to rave reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter hailing the film's "substantial mix of thrills and suspense with an energetic young cast that ably delivers the goods."

Entertainment Weekly called it "clever, hip and sophisticated!" The accolades continue with Rolling Stone proclaiming it "delicious, diabolical and fun," while Newsweek calls it "one hell of a fun movie." The album has also benefited from some early raves, with the San Francisco Chronicle claiming, "There's something here for all," and E! Online proclaiming "It's only fitting that a slasher flick should have a killer soundtrack."

Other artists on the "Scream 2" soundtrack album include all-new recordings by Sugar Ray, The Dave Matthews Band, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Foo Fighters, Tonic, Everclear, Less Than Jake and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, among others.

Those eager for more "Scream 2" goodies will find a veritable cyberfeast awaiting them as Capitol/Dimension Records joins forces with Liquid Audio, Microsoft Netshow and E! Online to launch an unprecedented Web-based marketing campaign for the album.
