The Birmingham, Alabama-based quartet Brother Cane was formed in 1990 by singer/guitarist Damon Johnson and bassist Glen Maxey; originally called Chyld, the groups line-up was soon complete with the addition of guitarist Roman Glick and drummer Scott Collier. After signing to Virgin Records, Brother Cane issued their self-titled debut LP in 1993. "Got No Shame" was the first single off the album and it became a major hit on the radio waves. These guys didn't rely on heavy promotions or marketing gimmicks to get their music out to people so they did it the old fashioned way and toured non-stop. They played over 300 shows opening for the likes of Robert Plant, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, the Allman Brothers, Aerosmith, and Van Halen.
After touring Maxey left the band. Glick a top notch bass player took over the bass duties and new comer David Anderson was hired to take Glick's place on the guitar. they then returned to the studios to begin work on their second album Seeds. The new album was released in July 1995 and it's first single "And Fools Shine On" tore up the radio charts in North America. Seeds has a much heavier, guitar oriented sound-in contrast to the blues sound of the self-titled. With the release of Seeds Brother Cane decided to leave the big shows for the club scene so they could build up their own fan base. Playing with legendary rockers like Aerosmith and Robert Plant, puts the diversity in their live show, had helped them build a fan base with people of various ages.
After Seeds, the guys took some time off. It would be three years before Brother Cane fans would hear a new album. In March of 1998 they released Wishpool. The dozen songs on Wishpool were culled from a group of 40 that recall the personality of Seeds, with an adventurousness that makes good on what Brother Cane has only hinted at before. Using his life as a lyrical reference, Johnson and his longtime writing partner, Marti Frederikson-along with a few others-penned a slew of songs that pay homage to the great guitar bands of decades past, while maintaining, a firm grip on today and beyond. They went back out on tour after the release of Wishpool and while on tour they were dropped by their record label. It was a mutual understanding between the band and the label. Brother Cane finished their tour at the end of 1998.
