On April 1st, 1999, Australia woke up to the possibility of Sydney loosing the 2000 Olympic games. Adam Spencer told us he had a journalist on the line from overseas where there had just been a secret 9 hour IOC meeting. We then heard somebody do a shocking french accent. This was meant to be the director of the IOC or someone along those lines. Anyway, he basically said that Sydney had lost the games. There was a media frenzy. People thought that Adam was for real and that he had a hot scoop. They mentioned it on Channel 9 while the ordeal was going on too. Adam Spencer then got Bob Carr on the line to say that "the Sydney games were never everything to us". Adam kept the fun going for well over an hour before finally giving it away! Well done Adam!

A lot of people abviously fell for it too!

Here is the results of a poll conducted on this web site after the prank:
(see results page or more poll results)

Where you fooled by Adam's April Fools prank?
April 99
(95 votes)

32% (30 votes) - Yes! I fell for it!
22% (21 votes) - Until I remembered what day it was.
29% (28 votes) - Not even for a second!
17% (16 votes) - I didn't hear it.

Here's what some people said about the joke...

"I work in a real estate office and the whole office including the managers, sales consultants etc who are very serious about there work where constantly listening to the radio all day ... and we all believed it!!!!! It was very original and it kicked ass over the shitty ones people were telling me about the other radio stations...."

"Maybe I should be blonde after all! Yes, I fell for it and not only all day Thursday, but little Miss Talkative was still going on about it on Sunday, yes Sunday. My friend couldn't handle the embarassment I was putting myself through any longer and had the decency to tell me.After I informed all his friends, and tried to get them to believe me. Call me a groupie, but Ithought every thing that came out of Adam's mouth was gospal."

"Yep, great work.  Had me going there for a while, but then I thought, "Spencer's taking it well . . .", and the date occured to me.  Clever bastard!""

"I'm the Network Program Director -  so I'm currently answering all the complaints from people who thought Adam's Olympics April Fool's Day joke "wasn't funny" and "who is in charge there?"." -- Stuart Matchett, Triple J Network Program Director

"look i've got some new information honest sydney is going to lose the games - you have to believe me this time
adam s
thanx for the congrats on the prank - glad we had you along for the line" -- Adam Spencer, Triple J DJ on the Breakfast show, the one behind this wonderful prank!

"[It] was pretty poor. Really obvious and all!"

"I was completly and utterly fooled by the prank for a while.  I was lying in bed and i was  very sleepy, which helped me believe it.  I lay there listening for a while in disbelief but when all the people were talking to Adam about it, it sounded so bloody real.  In the end i told my parents and then they told me it was april fools day so it had to be a joke. Congratulations to Spencer for a great job in tricking me."

"The Aprils fools joke about sydney olympic was the best april fools I've ever heard of and I recon they should get a trophie for it or soemthing!"
