KILLING HEIDI
The Arena, Brisbane,
QLD

by Dallas and Rebecca Hilla

After our nice grilling
6 hour drive from Gladstone down to Brisbane on Friday 3rd, we
ended up staying over a mates place from Uni and went to Rocking
Horse Records the next morning to quickly grab the tix before
they sold out. How's that for timing :) They had two types of
tix, grownups (18+) and youngsters (17-). The Youngsters tix was
for the all ages show which they had during the afternoon and
the Grownups one was for the late show that night. I assumed the
Grown up ones were for the people who are going to have beeries
and other amber liquids while they enjoyed the show, so we got
these. :)
Anyhow,
cruised into The Arena and the support band was first up. After
a few beers and hanging with mates acting like idiots, it was
time for KH to do their stuff. I wormed my way to the front of
the dance floor and managed to score a prime spot right up front,
how cool was that.
The bouncers had quite
a good go at stopping me taking photo's, but I managed to sneak
quite a few when they went off to grab people crowd surfing. I
found out much later, that you weren't meant to take a camera
to the concert, but hey, had to put the digi cam through its paces,
so I managed to get as many as possible, after all Flash memory
is cheap (download and re-use it again).
Ella was kick arse with
an excellent stage act. Playing all the greats - Mascara, Astral
Boy, Weir, Superman/Supergirl, Leave me alone and others pretty
much off their released album - Reflector ... The set was excellent.
The group had great stage style and really made you get into the
mosh! This was my first concert (Bec) and it was simply awesome.
They really kicked some ass!!! They also played for ages which
is quite unusual for a band playing live and they got on fairly
early, around 11pm and played until 1pm without even a break!!
How loyal is that to your fans!!
Afterwards it was off
to the bar to grab a water as it got quite hot inside The Arena
as it does in a closed off venue. There were so many people in
there that you had to squeeze your way to get anywhere in the
club. But this added to the great atmosphere that is the Arena!!
After it was all over
there was a mass exodus from the Arena doors into the street outside.
I don't think the Arena had anyone left after the show!! Most
of the people took themselves into town to continue the party....and
to get sloshed and eventually make it home somehow sometime in
the early morning.
Overall verdict- 10/10
for a Live Unearthed (Triple J) Australian Band.

Other Useless Information:
Digi Cam used was a
Kodak DC240 Zoom 3x with 8Mb flash memory card. Need to get a
16 or 32 aaahhhhhh !!! More phunny foto's...
Tickets were on paper
and they took them off you at the door and gave you a stamp on
the arm... No animals were harmed in the performance or compilation
of this review ...ohh except those found in the Mosh Pit!!!!
