Art, Craig, and drummer Scott Cuthbert recorded a demo EP in a friend's basement for $400. The EP, with the addition of a few new songs, became the album World of Noise, released on Tim/Kerr Records in 1993. Unsatisfied with T/K's promotion of the band, Alexakis took it upon himself to aggresively promote Everclear, mailing copies of the album to distributors and media outlets. The band toured relentlessly throughout 1994, and in the same year, Cuthbert left the band and was replaced by current drummer Greg Eklund. Everclear's popularity began gaining momentum. In 1995, after changing drummers, the band was signed to Capitol Records and released their second album Sparkle and Fade. The band got their first big hit with the song Santa Monica, a song written about Art attempting to commit suicide while living in Santa Monica. With the release of the album's single, Santa Monica, the band's popularity exploded. Soon Everclear became, and has remained, one of the top "alternative" bands in the country. Everclear's third album, So Much for the Afterglow, was released in October 1997. The album proved incredibly popular and produced a string of huge radio hits. In 1998 the band picked up Billboard's "Modern Artist of the Year" award, based on album sales and singles performance. More than a year after its release, and with the release of fourth single One Hit Wonder on the horizon, the So Much For The Afterglow juggernaut shows no signs of losing stream.
