SOME DAY WE'RE GONNA LOVE AGAIN single is the theme for this chapter. ................ right: DISC 4/7/64 |

The single came out in June 1964, had the catalogue no. PYE 7N 15670. It was released in many countries (with the same number), like Ireland, Australia, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden. In America it was on Kapp records K 609, in Germany on Vogue DV 14176.
The songs entered the NME charts on July 18th 64 at no. 15, up to 11 for three weeks, down to 15, 18, 29. A real setback compared to the preceding
hits. It did better in Melody Maker where it went (at least) to no. 6. Mersey Beat Magazine had it's own charts (see right) Only other chart entry was in the US where it got to no. 35 |

Spencer Leigh was the only one who ever interviewed Chris Curtis since the 60s. Spencer admits that he doesn't "go for" SOME DAY... Chris answered: "Well,
Dusty Springfield went for it ... We'd been working in the ice-rink at Blackpool and we had to fly back ... for the session. ... We flew down in the night, recorded in the morning ... I thought it was a good intro and the harmony is so high, it's like
Graham Nash." The ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION gives an insight into the way the Searchers recorded. The version of the song published there is rather different, a bit softer with less power and weaker vocals. |

Note: The German single had a different b side, taken from their first lp. Vogue didn't consider NO ONE... as strong enough. But this decision ignored their changed style.
In my opionion this is one of their best songs ever, there's no better intro anywhere and the multitracked Mike Pender voice is great, just listen to it in stereo with your headphones on. (But every Searchers fan has got his own favorite song.)

SOME DAY... turned out to be Tony's last Searchers single. In August 64 he left after being squeezed out of the group especially by Chris who didn't like
Tony from the beginning. May be he already intended to get Frank Allen who was a close friend of his since the days in Hamburg. So the picture on the left - from mid 64 - is symbolic for the situation in the group - the three others against Tony. The
title of the single can be interpreted as the possibility of a return which never happened (except on one or two occasions where Tony joined the others for a few songs, but that was in the 80s) |

Usually I introduce the EPs and LPs as well, but there are only two EPs with both tracks on it and they were released after the success of their next single. So - wait until next issue.
No original LP ever contained one of the two songs. |
