Phil Babb made his debut for Liverpool against Man Utd on 17th September 1994, days after he
was signed from Coventry. At that time, he was already a regular in the Ireland side and it was
his first rate performance at USA'94 that prompted the club to sign him. In his first few seasons,
he played quite regularly but in recent years, he has been dropped several times already. Perhaps
he is more well-known for having scored only one goal in his Liverpool career. Nevertheless, Babb
is a committed player who has worked to improve the weaker aspects of his game, given the pressure
of having to live up to his signing fee, which was a record for defenders back then.
Being firmly out of Gerard Houllier's plans, Babb has missed out on selection and has found
it difficult just to get a place on the Reds' bench. He is still sought after though, with
several Division 1 and foreign sides chasing his signature.
Babb's contract ends on January 1st and the defender is already looking elsewhere for regular
first team football. At this point, Babb's Liverpool career looks effectively over.
