Against All Odds

How can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath with you
You're the only one who really knew me at all

Brian felt like the world was moving in slow motion. He stormed down the corridor at a pace that could only indicate that he had an important place to go, or purpose.....but the truth was, he had no idea what he was doing, or where he was going. He was confused, angry, devastated, scared....and worst of all, he was alone.

Brian stopped suddenly, his tears finally easing....anger growing in his belly.

“How could she do this to me.....to us...” Brian kicked the corridor wall. It felt good. He kicked it again, harder, again and again. Left and right boots. Again....again.

“Fuck!!” Brian cursed and with all his power sent his right fist into the wall. His fist broke through the plaster, leaving a large uneven hole. Brian stared shocked at the damage he had caused for a second. In a way, the breaking of the wall symbolised his enire being, crumbling around him.

Then came the pain.

“Shit....” Brian pulled his fist out of the wall quickly. His knuckles were bleeding and purple from the impact, he tried to stretch out his fingers......he winced in pain as they refused to uncurl.

Brian tucked his hand close to his chest and continued to storm down the hall.

How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one Who really knew me at all

“Cassidy....” Nick called as Cassidy went to leave the room.
Cassidy shook her head and opened the door defiantly. Her eyes dropped to the floor in front of her. She gasped.

There was Becca, lying face up...motionless on the ground. Her face looked so oddly pale against the vibrant blue carpet. She looked as if all the life had been sucked out of her and had gone into the carpet....so strange, like those paintings that noone gets......strange.

Cassidy snapped back to reality and dropped to the floor beside Becca.

“Becca wake up....Becca! Can you hear me?? Becca!!” Cassidy gently tapped Becca’s cheek and shook her shoulders desperatley.

No response. Her body was as limp as a childs doll.

“Nick!!!” Cassidy called out hysterically. She had no idea what to do. She felt so helpless, as she stared horrified at Rebecca’s grey, lifeless complexion.
Nick ran to the door and his mouth dropped open as he saw Becca.
“Call an ambulance....” Cassidy cried, continuing to look for signs of movement from Becca.

Nick stood there dumbfounded. Staring at Becca, he was almost torn between his heart and his head for what he was feeling.....after all, she was a traitor wasn’t she?

“Nick! Call an ambulance....hurry!” Cassidy screamed.

“I...I...don’t....” Nick stammered, not taking his eyes off Becca.

“Some friend....” Cassidy spat at Nick as she jumped to her feet and ran inside to call an ambulance.

Nick couldn’t take this anymore. He didn’t know what to believe and he didn’t know who to trust. He just needed to be on his own to breathe....he didn’t need this shit....he didn’t......he didn’t know what he needed...

Taking a final look at Becca, Nick took a deep breath and sprinted down the hall as fast as his legs would take him.

So take a look at me now
Oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds
And that's what I've got to face

“Kirstie....Kirstie baby are you in here?” AJ said quietly as he entered the dark room.
“I’m here J....” Kirstie replied from her place on the bed.
“Are you ok?” He inquired gently as he sat down beside her, taking both her hands in his.
“Umm....no I can’t say that I am...” Kirstie sniffled as she looked down at their entwined hands.
“Aww...baby please don’t cry...please...” AJ wiped her cheek as a solitary tear left her eye.
“AJ.....how am I supposed to go back there without you? He’ll find me I know it....” Kirstie brought up a subject that she had for so long hidden from her memory. The police couldn’t keep Matt forever....and nothing was stopping him from finding Kirstie again and finishing what he started. Kirstie shivered at the thought.

AJ felt a breeze of fear cut through him as she said that last part. He couldn’t stand her being in danger.

“Kirstie, you listen to me.....you don’t go back to your place until I get home alright? You stay with Becca and Cassidy. He’s not going to know you’re back in Florida unless someone sees you at your house. Just stay with Becca and Cassidy and you’ll be fine...” AJ was trying to reassure himself as much as he was Kirstie.

“AJ....I’m scared.....” Kirstie whispered.

“I know....I am too....” AJ replied quietly. Kirstie looked up strangly at the tone of his voice. She looked into AJ’s eyes almost in disbelief at first....she looked again and she was positive. Tears were forming in his eyes.

“Aww...baby, please don’t cry...” Kirstie gave a little half smile as she kissed his lips tenderly.

I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all

Brian drove around aimlessly. He was driving fast. He didn’t know the exact speed, but he knew he was flying.

Buildings and parks blurred by. People on the street went about their daily business, their normal lives. But Brian’s life felt as though it had been turned on its head.

Brian drove with his left hand on the wheel, his right still throbbing as he kept it tucked close to himself. He had decided by now that something was broken or some serious damage had been caused because the pain was unbearable. He needed a doctor and some painkillers quick. Something had to take the pain away.....well the pain that it could anyway.

He continued to drive and look for a hospital.

So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause l'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
That's the chance I've got to take

Take a look at me now
