Named for Edgar Allen Poe, "the father of the American detective story," the Edgar award is one of the most prestigious awards coveted by writers. The Edgars were begun in 1946 and have been presented to such mystery illuminati as Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, James M. Cain, John D. MacDonald, Raymond Chandler, Ellis Peters, Margaret Millar, John Le Carré, Tony Hillerman, and Charlotte Armstrong.
