Struga is a beautiful town of approximately 20,000 people in the SW corner of Macedonia on Lake Ohrid about 15km from the town of Ohrid. The population is approx. half Macedonian and Albanian with a small minority of Turks and Vlachs. The population doubles however in the summer as tourists flock to the beaches of the area. Struga is also well known for its International Poetry Festival that takes place every August.
The town itself is charming with the Trsni Drim
river flowing out from Lake Ohrid through the center of town. The river
is very unique in that it starts on the other side of the lake and flows
through without mixing with the lake water, before weaving its way through
Macedonia and into Albania before reaching the sea.
